Today, English has become one of the most important means of communications throughout the global political, economical, social, cultural and learning fields in the world. Under such circumstances, the Korean Ministry of Education pronounced to teach English in the elementary schools in 1982. English has, therefore, been taught from the 3rd grade of the elementary schools as a regular course since 1997.
The primary objective of this thesis is to examine the present situation of the early English education in Korea and that in other countries in the world, and to suggest the directions improved for teaching English in the elementary schools of Korea, comparing the present early education of foreign language in the other countries with ours.
At this point, we try to prove that a number of theories and the actual cases, as mentioned in this paper, show that children are better equipped to learn English with efficiency than adults including even older children. The logical result of these theories and the actual examples is that younger children relatively have the natural ability to learn foreign language effectively.
In terms of these points of view, to offer better educational environment to our children, we should try to improve educational finances, the quality of English teachers, educational facilities, and teaching methods.
The last chapter, therefore, concludes this thesis by suggesting some desirable directions of the early English education in Korea. Some of them are as follows:
(1) Consistent educational policies should be established.
(2) Specialization of English teachers is needed.
(3) The improvement of the environment of education is required.
(4) The Eclectic Teaching Method for elementary school students is required.
(5) Differences between the western culture and our own culture should be taught.
(6) Reducing the number of students in a classroom should be considered as well.
