This is the case to the study that subject to a child who can not adapt peer group and can not have good relationship with friends. So far study about an isolated child targeted to group. As a result there were some limits to find out psychological reasons of isolation. So the goal of this study is to study what kind of positive effect can be on an isolated child by using the psychological reason.
The child who is the subject of the study is 11years old, 4th grade of elementary school, could not adapt his peer relationships and had a hard time to make friends. He showed symptoms of depression, anxiety, being coward easily, and aggressive behavior. His mother made him get an art therapy at OO welfare foundation. For 1year, from Nov. 2009 to Oct. 2010, he had gotten therapy 40 sessions.
This case was studied based on Winncott’s Transitional Object Theory due to the fact that the child could not take enough care from his mother at the first stage. Because his mother was suffering from groundless illness. He played solitarily which made him isolated.
The study was divided into 3 stages which are the initial stage, the middle
stage and the last stage. During the study, his growing ability to mingle with other friends has been observed, rather than playing solitarily.
HTP art test, K-CBCL and observed records per each stage were used to evaluate change of his behavior. And the results were analyzed. According to the result of HTP art test his change by taking art therapy was observed. From the house, tree, people picture that he drew it was confirmed that he expressed himself more. From the result of K-CBCL the range of his mental factors such as depression, anxiety, being coward easily, sociality reached normal. Moreover from the analyzed result of observed record per stage he showed positive change when it comes to emotion and sociality.
As a result it is confirmed that art therapy has a positive effect on an isolated child.
