    Evaluating co-relationship between OCO-2 XCO2 and in situ CO2 measured with portable equipment in Seoul

    The co-relationship between OCO-2 XCO2 concentration and ground CO2 concentration remains largely unexplored. This raises questions about the reliability of OCO-2 column-averaged CO2 concentrations (XCO2) data. This paper examined the co-relationship between OCO-2 level 2 data (29 sample points acquired on March 23, 2015) and ground level, ‘ambient’ carbon dioxide. Ground CO2 was simultaneously measured using portable equipment, at the season and nearby-location of the satellite measurements. The result reveals that OCO-2 XCO2 data were closely associated with ground CO2 data (R2 = 0.43). The overall uncertainty for the carbon measurements ranged from 398.6 to 407.9 ppm for OCO-2 and from 437.3 to 503.5 ppm for ground level. Data from these experiments suggest that the ambient CO2 concentration is much higher than the OCO-2 XCO2. In situ CO2 levels differ significantly from the OCO-2 XCO2 in case that dominant land cover within OCO-2 column boundary is non-coincident with that of in situ survey point. It is anticipated that this research outcome could be used as a valuable reference for quality assurance of OCO-2 data in relation to portable carbon monitoring.
