The purpose of this study was to assess the educational effectiveness of Korean traditional music education based on play and its influence on children’s comprehension of Changdan. Five-year-old children were assigned to two experimental groups and a control group. The first group received the educational program based on play, the second group received the program based on technique and the third group was set up as a control. The estimation implements of the degree of comprehension for Changdan subordinate concepts(Changdan pattern, Changdan bit, Changdan tempo and Changdan accent) were composed of three questions in Changdan subordinate concepts, respectively. The data analyzed by ANCOVA showed that the degree of the Changdan comprehension was higher in two experimental groups than in the control group and that the educational program based on play was overall superior to the educational program based on the technique.
