국문 초록 (Abstract)

『중국총보』는 초기 서구 개신교 선교사들이 1832년부터 1851년까지 20년간 중국에서 발행한 최초의 영문 월간지이다. 여기에는 『중국총보』 제작자들의 필요에 의해 중국어론들이 연재되었는데, 당시까지의 서양의 중국어연구성과들을 계승한 위에서, 중국어성서번역 및 사전 편찬의 실제적 과정들과 결합하여, 19세기 서양의 중국인식 가운데 중국 언어에 대한 인식의 과정을 살펴볼 수 있게 해 주는 글들이다. 여기서는 그중 브리지먼이 쓴 총론적 글을 역주하였다.
브리지먼은 먼저 중국어가 매우 고대에 생긴 언어이면서도 처음 생겨나던 당시의 모습을 변함없이 간직하고 있다는 것을 이야기하고, 한자의 특징에 대해서도 설명한다. 그 다음에는 예수회 선교사들의 업적을 중심으로 중국어에 대한 서양의 연구를 소개한다. 그리고 브리지먼과 동시대의 저자들에 의해 이루어진 중국어 문법서 및 사전 편찬의 작업들을 이야기한 후, 왜 서양인들이 중국어를 연구하여야 하는지를 국민 국가체계 속에서 중국의 위치설정과 서양과의 무역 및 기독교 선교의 유용성이라는 입장에서 역설한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Chinese Repository is the first monthly magazine published by early Western christian missionaries in English, from 1832 to 1851. In this magazine, about 30 articles on the Chinese language were published serially. Through these articles, we can find out what ideas the editors and publishers of that magazine have on the character of the Chinese Language. The fact that they are also the translators of the Bible into Chinese, and the writers of many important Chinese dictionaries is the reason why I translate and annotate Bridgman’s first article on the Chinese language here.
First, Bridgman says that the Chinese Language is an ancient language, but originality is a striking characteristic of that language. Second, he explains the Chinese characters. Third, he introduces the various works of the Jesuit missionaries, for example, their grammars and dictionaries. Lastly, he emphasizes that Westerners have to study Chinese, and explains the reason why they learn Chinese.
