임진왜란 시기 조선의 대일 전략(對日 戰略)－1593년 일본군의 한성 퇴각을 중심으로－ = The Anti-Japanese Strategy of Chosǒn during the Imjin War (1592-1598)－The Case of the Japanese Withdrawal in May 1593－

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article charts how Chosǒn pursued an anti-Japanese strategy after the retreat of the Japanese armies from Seoul in May 1593. As for the Ming armies, the most practical method of breaking the deadlock of the battle front along the Imjin River in the first quarter of 1593 was a successful negotiation through which to let the Japanese armies in Seoul withdraw from the central part of Chosǒn. For this purpose, the Ming armies prevented its partner Chosǒn armies from chasing the enemies on the run. At the same time, the Ming armies temporarily deployed the newly dispatched troops only in the southern part of Chosǒn against a possible re-invasion by the Japanese armies after a rupture of the negotiation. As opposed to this two-track strategy, the Chosǒn court argued vehemently and yet logically against the Ming- Japan negotiation while persistently asking the Ming armies for a rapid military reinforcement in order to attack the retreating Japanese armies. And, the Chosǒn armies started conducting independent operations, if locally and on a small scale, against the Japanese armies in the southern part of their territory. With focus on the Chosǒn’s anti- Japanese strategy as above, this study will not only offer an insight into the coexistence of cooperation and conflict in the Chosǒn-Ming military alliance against their common enemy, but also deepen our understanding of the Imjin War, or the Japanese Invasion of Korea as an international war in East Asia.
