This study is to look both at the ceremonial costumes of the Korean envoys and at Byeolpok that were exchanged between the envoys of the two countries. The following are the research findings.
For the most part, the ceremony was hosted by three envoys including senior envoys and vice envoys. The main part of the formal events was to present the credentials of the King of Chosun to the Gwanbaek of Japan and to receive his reply. The two countries exchanged Byeolpok, a kind of Yedan, during the ceremony.
The Korean envoys and their suites were dressed up with Po, such as Danryeong, Jikryeong, and Changeui, during the ceremony. They wore Hyoongbae-attached Danryeong with Samo, Jikryeong with Iip, Danryeong with Iip, Jikryeong without any Gwanmo, or Changot and Jeonbok with Jeonlip. These types of costumes were determined depending on the social status of the envoys and their suites.
Byeolpok that were exchanged between the two countries was also studied in this research. Main items of Byeolpok of Chosun was fabric, such as silk, cloth and leather. And Japan mostly prepared objects of craftwork. Fabric had still been the main items in the early 18th century since it began to be sent to Japan in the beginning era of Chosun. This fact tells us that Chosun's fabric was highly developed.
