This dissertation is a study on the poems written in the Chinese Characters during the Acceptance Period of Neo-Confucianism at the end of the Koryo Dynasty. It is summarized as follows:
Ⅰ. In the part of introduction, the writer states the purpose, the limits and the approach of this study. The literature written in Chinese characters has changed in many ways after having introduced the Neo-Confucianism. This sutdy aims at probing the changing process and characteristics of the poems in the point of the historical view of the Korean Literature. And it is limited in the period from the days of King Chungryeol (at this time the Neo-Confucianism was introduced into this country) till the fall of the Koryo Dynasty. And the writer analyzes the poems in the perspective of the historical criticism.
Ⅱ. In the second chapter, the setting of the times is surveyed. In this part it was clarified that Zheng-Zhu Confucianism was introduced and developed by An Hyang and Paeck Yijeong and their students, by whom the school so called Neo-Confucianism was formed.
Ⅲ. In third cahpter, the acceptance of the Neo-Confucianism and the changing process of poems written in Chinese characters are studied. It is surveyed in the three steps: the periods of introducing, learning, and settling of the Neo-Confucianism respectively. First, the writer criticizes An Hyang and Paeck Yijeong at the period of introducing the decree into the Koryo Dynasty. Especially, An, who was the first Confucianist, stressed sincerity and respectability. And his literary works almost were inclined to be those of the Confucianism. so was Paeck Yijeong. The trends of the poetics at that time was transferred into the ones emphasizing content than form and rhetoric. Second, the period of learning was surveyed putting Lee Chehyun and Lee Kock (both were men of letters at that time) in focus. They emphasized their ideas on the human virtue rather than on the phrases or the rhetoric. Due to these ideas, their literatures were inclined to develop the Neo-Confucianism. The characteristics of the poetic literature at this time were inclined to the utility of practice, so called loyality and filial piety rather than the cultivation of mind. Third, it is about the poetics in the period of settling the Neo-Confucianism. The writer surveys the trends putting the four men of letters including Lee Saeck, Jeong Mongju, Lee Soongin and Kil Chae in the center. They studied Neo-Con-fucianism and taught it to the students; Lee Saeck, the president and Cheong-Mongju and Lee Soongin, professors of Sung Kyun Kwan, respectively. Therefore, their poetics were influenced by the Neo-Confucianism and also their literary thoughts were considered in. common as cultivating humanity. That is, it was thought that the literature of poems was helpful in cultivating the human mind.
Ⅳ. In fourth chapter, the writer surveys the common characteristics of the poems written in chinese characters during the acceptance period of Neo-Confucianism. First, most of the poems were expressed with the trends of the Neo-confucianism; Poetry must be helpful to cultivate the human mind. Second, the poems with the thought of the loyalty and the filial piety appeared abundantly, for it showed that the Neo-confucianism was related to emphasing the aspects of human ethic. Third, the poems expressing the folk of our country appeared abundantly also. Fourth, it contained the pastoral literature of hermits, for there was a trend to cultivate the mind in the one aspect of the Neo-Confucianism. As a result of this influence, they returned to the rural life in order to cultivate their mind.
Ⅴ. In fifth chapter, the characteristics of the poems written in Chinese characters at the end period of the Koryo Dynasty is surveyed in the view of the historical significance of the Korean literature. The poems expressed in the trends of the Neo-Con-fucianism begins to appear at the end of the Koryo Dynasty. This phenomenon appeared after the acceptance of the Neo-Confucianism. That is, in this period, what to write was more important than how to write. The poets at this time thought that the ethics and cultivation of mind should be included in poems. Because this characteristics was succeeded by the Yi Dynasty as it was the poems written in Chinese characters in this period had great significance in the history of the Korean literature.
Ⅵ. In the part of conclusion, the writer surveys and concludes that the poems written in Chinese characters during the acceptance period of Neo-Confucianism influenced the poems written in the Chinese characters, with the ideas of Neo-Confucianism in the Yi Dynasty.
