This study was designed to research hand-painted ceramic plates that were produced by Daehan Ceramic Wares which was the most representative ceramic ware company of Busan in the 1950s to 70s. The company was the largest ceramic ware producer of the East in the period from Korea`s national independence to the 1970s. Among its product lines were painted ceramic plates for hanging that are remarkable in the history of painting because they had images on them, which were illustrated by painters in their own. Many of those painters were refugees who went to Busan during the Korean War. Daehan Ceramic Wares could have lots of very skilled painters participating in painting ceramic plates and the artists could maintain their livelihood even in the turbulence of the war. Representative images illustrated on the hanging ceramic plates were, stylistically, landscape painting led by Byeon Gwan-sik, figure painting by Kim Eun-ho, genre painting by Kim Eun-ho`s disciples and Western painting led by Jeon Hyeok-rim. This study investigated the periodic developments and characteristics of each of those different painting styles. Especially, genre painting expressed on the ceramic plates was modern and new beyond Joseon`s traditional one and diverse in pattern. The ceramic works with genre painting played a diplomatic role as the sign of peace during the war. Painters surveyed here had initially not identified themselves with their real names because they had thought hand painting was not orthodox. But this study presumed what the real names were with reference to official documents of that time and recollections or oral statements that the painters left. The study hopes that any others who were ceramic ware painters for Daehan Ceramic Wares, but are not certainly identifiable even with the official documents can be all identified through finding out and analyzing other related historic records and additional oral statements.
