The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of social skill deficiencies of children and the effectiveness of social skill interventions through literature review. A social skill deficiency of a particular child is due to either one or a combination of causes. Thus, professionals must assess not only the levels and types of social skill deficiencies but also specific causes of social skills deficiencies. Three main results are provided in this article. First, characteristics of isolated children and their problem behaviors are identified Second, three major theoretical approches to social skill deficiencies and their intervention strategies are examined. Third, relative effectiveness of intervention strategies based on thee different theoretical approaches is evaluated. In genera the existing research results show that intervention strategies based on the operant approaches and social learning (modeling) approaches are more effective than those based on the cognitive behavioral approaches, especially for young children. This study on theoretical approaches to social skill deficiencies and relative effectiveness of their intervention strategies provides implication for social skill training procedures. Case studies on behavioral changes Bid successful development of children need to be based on the results of this literature review. This study will help practitioners understand characteristics of children with social skill deficiencies and provide up-to-date results of research in social skills to researches of early childhood.
