Recently, the intellectual trend of academics breaks down the barriers between children’s literature and general literature, mass culture and high culture, and fantasy and realism. In such a context, Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, can be considered as a text foreshadowing the literary style of postmodernism, in which countless questions and answers arise. It is a fundamental philosophical text that scrutinizes human lives reflectively and critically, going beyond the depiction of cultural phenomena.
This thesis aims to reinterpret Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from the perspective of “the surface effect” which takes a central place in Gilles Deleuze's philosophy of ontology of the early phase. Deleuze rejects a transcendental subject that makes essence, perception, and meaning possible beyond the physical world and discovers the third space, an invisible and dynamic space, which lies between the world and the subject to make reasoning and language possible. Deleuze identifies this third space as the surface. Through his theory on “difference and surface,” Deleuze broke the ground in the field of thought by arguing against the philosophy of representation like Platonism. While representation aims to return to the original idea or the analogous, the surface aims for constant becoming as the place where events and meaning occur.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a work that maximizes the freedom of existence through paradox and breaking the barrier between sense and nonsense. The world in which Alice exists is a world of nonsense with illogical language, dislocated grammar and game rules, and characters with a lack of causality. As Alice runs through this world, readers experience the creation of a new meaning under the clash of sense and nonsense, and paradox and nonsense. The text surpasses the simple dichotomy of order and chaos by skirting the surface to reach “chaosmos” where new organizations of meaning and order continuously appear. The unlimited becoming that is created at the surface is read as the unconscious desire for progress among human beings.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland constantly questions the truth of identity. In Alice’s world, the boundaries between humans and animals, and living creatures and non-living things, become ambiguous. Even though the cat disappears, the feature of its smile can remain; the order of the subject and its property are subverted in this wonderland of constant change and becoming. Deleuze relates the issue of identity with the fulfillment of a subject’s free desire.
As Alice rushes into the cave to follow the rabbit out of pure curiosity, adventitious courage that pursues new connection to new objects initiates the realization of free desire to escape the limitations of order and generality. As Alice bursts the surface by traveling all depths and heights, Deleuze suggests to the readers of the 21st century that they should have an insight into the meaninglessness of the false heights and depths. Reading Alice Adventures in Wonderland based on the philosophical ground of the surface introduces us to the essential philosophy of Deleuze that seeks the true desire of an autonomous subject on the surface of life fulfillment.
