Objective:Describethephenomenonof“clearqibelow,turbidqiabove”asfoundintheSomun･Eumyangeungsangdaelon(Major EssayonYinyangResonancesandAppearances素問･陰陽應象大論)andcomparethispatternwithwater-graindysenteryandflatulence symptom patternsintheSanghallon(TreatiseonColdDamage). Method:StudytheannotationoftheHwangjenaegyeong(YellowEmperor’sInternalClassic黃帝內經)andcomparetheresultswith theSanghallon’swater-graindysenteryandflatulence. ConclusionsandResults:Thecausesofwater-graindysenteryandflatulenceareassociatedwiththeascendinganddescending propertiesofYinandYang.Additionally,thesesymptomscanalsobecausedbypathogenicheat,turbidpathogenicfactors,andinterruption ofthemovementofclearandturbidqi.Aspectsofwater-graindysenteryresembleseveralpatternsfoundintheSanghallon.Ifcaused byaweaknessofyangqi,itresemblesSayeoktang(四逆湯)syndrome.WeaknessofspleenqiresemblesIjungtang(理中湯)syndrome. Flatulenceissimilartofullnessinthechestsyndrome,whichintheSanghalloniscausedbyanobstructionofcoldqi.Ifthereis excessivecold,water-graindysenteryissimilartothesyndromeofGyeolhyung(結胸).Iftheqiisnotscattered,deficiencysyndrome issimilartoGyejigejagyaktang(桂枝去芍藥湯)syndromeandexcesssyndromeissimilartoMahwangtang(麻黃湯)syndrome.When flatulenceiscausedbyfeverinchest,itissimilartoChijasitang(梔子豉湯)syndrome.Whencausedbyheatandphlegm buildupin chest,itissimilartoSipjotang(十棗湯)syndrome.
