오리게네스의 작품과 아우구스티누스 = The Septuagint(LXX) in Origen’s Works and the Debate between Augustine and Jerome

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 초대 교회에 있었던『70인 역』에 대한 주요 논의들을 통해 오늘날 한국 (개신교) 교회 내에서의『70인 역』의 의미와 위치를 찾아보는 시도로 작성되었다. 『70인역』은 신약 성경 저자 이래로 교회의 구약 성경으로 사용되어 왔으나, 번역본이요 전승 방법이 불명확한 것으로 치부되어 초대 교회로부터 다양한 평가를 받아왔다. 이에 대해 혹자들은『70인 역』을 지키려고 했고, 다른 이들은 히브리어 원문과의 신중한 비교로 『70인 역』을 극복하려고 노력했다. 이러한 노력들은 교회사에서『70인 역』에 대한 교회의 전통과 쇄신이라는 두 입장으로 나타났으며, 이러한 입장을 살펴봄으로 교회 내에서의 『70인 역』의 의미와 위치를 고려해 볼 수 있을 것이다. 이를 위해 우선 필자는 오리게네스의 『헥사플라』와 오리게네스와 아프리카누스가 교환한 서신들 (『아프리카누스에게』; 아프리카누스, 『 오리겐에게』)을 분석하여 주후 3세기 초반에 있었던 『70인 역』의 위치를 살펴보았다. 오리게네스는 당대에 사용되던『70인 역』의문제점을직시하고, 『 70인역』의 원형을 찾으려는 시도로 전통과 쇄신을 동시에 추구하였다. 이후, 라틴어 구약 성경 번역에 대한 아우구스티누스 (『70인역』지지)-히에로니무스(히브리어 성경을 지지)의 논쟁적 서신들도 분석을 통해 주후 4-5세기에 있었던『70인 역』에 대한 태도를 살펴보았다. 서신서들에는 양자 모두(비록 히에로니무스가 더 철저했지만) 본문을 비교-설명하려 시도했으나, 동시에『70인 역』을 존중하는 태도를 가지고 있었음을 알았다. 이들의 태도 역시 오리게네스처럼, 성경 본문에 대한 열정과 더불어 그들이 속한 교회와 성경과의 관계를 고려하는 전통과 쇄신을 함께 추구하는 태도를 보여주고 있다. 이러한 결론은 오늘날 한국 (개신교) 교회 내에서『70인 역』의 가치를 재고하며(전통) 진리를 추구하는데 귀하게 사용할 것(쇄신)을 제안한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article tries to locate the Septuagint(LXX) in the proper place within Korean (Protestant) Christianity referring to important discussions of the early Christianity on the Septuagint. The Septuagint had had a canonical position since the beginning of Christianity. However, both its identity as a translation and its transmissional uncertainty often led to various evaluations of it in the early Christianity. In terms of such evaluations, some tried to defend the Septuagint, the others wanted to renovate it with critical comparison with Hebrew original. I think that such efforts reflect a twofold attitude(i.e. tradition and renovation) of the early Christianity on the Septuagint, and based on their attitude “we” may find the position of the Septuagint within the Korean (Protestant) church. In order to find some ground for it, I analysed Origen’s works on the Septuagint, i.e. the Hexapla and letters between Origen and Africanus, which revealed an attitude of the third-century Christianity on the Septuagint. Origen who had found some problems of the Septuagint used in his times carefully considered both tradition and renovation in order to pursue the original form of the Septuagint. And then, I tried to look at the fourth and fifth-century attitude on the Septuagint through analysing the argumentative letters between Augustine and Jerome on the translation issue of Latin Old Testament. These letters revealed that both(in case of Jerome, more critically) not only attempted to compare the Septuagint with Hebrew/Latin sources, but also respected it. Their attitude to the Septuagint favored to both tradition and renovation that targeted to the restoration of text and the relationship between the Bible and the contemporary church, just as Origen did. Such conclusions hint today’s Korean (Protestant) church to reconsider some value of the Septuagint within the church(tradition) and use it in order to pursue the truth of the Bible(renovation).
