      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims to analyze the psychosexual problems of Joe Christmas, the main protagonist of William Faulkner’s Light in August. Many have attempted to elucidate the motivation behind Joe’s cold-hearted murder of Joanna Burden, a white spinster in her forties who also happens to be his lover. However, what matters is not why he killed her, but why he could not leave her when he had the opportunity to do so. This paper tries to prove that his early traumatic experience of inadvertently seeing a dietitian and an intern having sex damages him irrevocably, which brings about a kind of indeterminacy disorder as well as a failure to develop his superego. As a result, he is a racially ambiguous individual who identifies himself as neither white nor black. He also disavows any fixed sexual orientation, but rather oscillates between sadism and masochism. He also searches for a symbolic father figure who would punish him for his wrongdoings. Miss Burden could be his perfect partner in that she herself possesses sexual indeterminacy and manlike fortitude. However, when she forces Joe to come out as black and conform to her traditional set of values, Joe resists her intrusion and ends up killing her.
