Trends of Higher Education Research: Research Topic Analysis

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study analyzed journal articles published from 2000 to 2007 in order to study the trends of higher education research in the world and in Korea. For this study, three journals on higher education from the United States (Research in Higher Education, Journal of Higher Education, and Review of Higher Education), one journal from the U.K. (Studies in Higher Education), one journal with worldwide publications (Higher Education), and five Korean journals were selected.
In the analysis, a content analysis was applied and each articles in the journals were coded to one of eight topic areas. According to the content analysis, higher education research in the world has been most focused on student related topics, followed by topics related to curriculum, then those on learning and teaching. In Korea, however, administration and governance, students, and finance related topics have been relatively popular research topics in higher education research. The findings of this study imply that empirical, cite-based, and student-oriented researches were proposed as the future directions for higher education research in Korea.
