This study suggests the research model through a literature review, which has the relationships between entrepreneur’s work-related rumination and innovation of the early-stage startup, and the mediation effects of sleep on these relationships. Work-related rumination, which is “a perseverative thinking about work” during off-job time, consists of affective rumination, problem-solving pondering, and psychological detachment(Querstret & Cropley, 2012: p.7). Affective rumination is “an intrusive, pervasive, recurring thought about work, which is experienced as negative in affective terms,” and problem-solving pondering refers to “merely reconsidering work-related issues during off-job time(Weigelt et al., 2019: p.3).” Psychological detachment from work refers to “an individual’s sense of being away from the work situation(Etzion et al., 1998: p.579).” Work-related rumination has an impact on entrepreneur’s innovative work behavior, which finally increases creativity and innovation of the early-stage startup. Innovative work behavior consists of idea exploration, idea generation, idea championing, and idea implementation(de Jong & den Hartog, 2010). Idea generation activity encompasses idea exploration and generation behavior, and idea implementation activity encompasses idea championing and implementation behavior(e.g. Dorenbosch et al., 2005; Krause, 2004). The model suggests the hypotheses as follows. (1) Affective rumination decreases idea generation and implementation activity. Problem-solving pondering increases idea generation and implementation activity. Psychological detachment from work decreases idea generation activity and increases idea implementation activity. (2) Sleep has the mediation effect on the relationship between work-related rumination and innovative work behavior. (3) Affective rumination and problem-solving pondering induce sleep problems, and psychological detachment induces a good sleep. (4) Sleep induces entrepreneur’s idea generation activity through cognitive activation and induces idea implementation activity through increasing social competence. (5) Entrepreneur’s idea generation activity is related to creativity of the early-stage startup, and entrepreneur’s idea implementation activity is related to innovation of the early-stage startup. Its creativity is related to its innovation.
