Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is a common maligant tumor which shows different frequency along the geographic areas. Various factors, such as HBV infection, cirrhosis, and aflatoxin, are proposed as an etiology of HCC, though, in endemic areas of HBV infection chronic HBV infection and postnecrotic cirrhosis are thought to be main etiologic factors. To observe the relation between HBV infection, cirrhoisis, and HCC, the authors collected 27 cases of HCC obtained by needle biopsy and lobectomy, then performed immunoenzme histologic stain by Avidin-Biotin-Complex method using anti-human HBsAg and HBcAg for the detectioin of HBsAg and HBcAg.
Results obtained are following as ;
1. In twenty seven cases of HCC, accompanying neighboring tissue was detectable in 15 cases, of which liver cirrhosis was shown 13 cases (87%).
2. Positive reaction of HBsAg and HBcAg within neoplastic cell is 8 cases (30%) and 4 cases (15%) respectively in total number of 27 cases of HCC.
3. In 15 cases of HCC with detectable surrounding tissue, 14 cases (93%) shown
HBsAg and HBcAg positive reaction respectively in nonneoplastic cells.
The above results shows that HBV infection and cirrhosis are closely related with the develpoment of HCC
