Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are caused by the collapse of the Fe cores of massive stars ($M_{\rm ZAMS}>8$\msun) at the end of their evolutionary paths. Their contribution to the dynamical and chemical evolution of the universe includes regulating star formation activities in the galaxies by injecting huge energy and momentum into the nearby region, interspersing chemically-enriched matter into the universe, and forming molecules and dust grains in their ejecta. Especially, they are suggested to be the main dust producers in the early universe, because the dust masses estimated for high-z galaxies are larger than what asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars could have produced within the age of the contemporary universe. We can spectroscopically observe emission lines from important molecules, e.g., carbon monoxide (CO), as well as emission from freshly-formed dust grains, of which the analysis and comparison to theoretical dust models can broaden our understanding of dust formation processes in SNe.
CCSNe can also be used to study the evolutionary history of massive stars. They show a great diversity in their light curves (LCs) and spectra, which are greatly influenced by the progenitor properties, e.g., mass, radius, chemical composition, and density structure. Pre-SN properties of the progenitors depend on their evolutionary histories. A single star without a companion loses its mass by a stellar wind, of which the mass-loss rate is dictated dominantly by the ZAMS mass and metallicity of the progenitor, whereas a massive star in a binary system may experience mass-loss due to close binary interactions, depending on the mass ratio between the progenitor and the companion, the binary period, etc. For example, progenitors of SNe IIP/IIL with strong H lines in the spectra retain most of their H-rich envelopes until the SN explosion, while SNe IIb/Ib/Ic with weak or absent H lines are thought to have H-rich envelopes of their progenitors heavily stripped during their evolution. In addition to this, some of CCSNe show signs of interactions between SN ejecta and dense circumstellar medium (CSM) that has been ejected from the progenitors, between tens of days and decades before the explosion. The study of pre-SN enhanced mass-loss allows us to understand the terminal stage evolution of massive stars better.
This thesis used H-rich SNe II as the subject of study, which includes investigating pre-SN states of SNe II progenitors and their mass-loss history by comparing numerically modelled optical LCs to the observations, as well as aiming to understand dust formation in SNe II ejecta by analyzing CO and dust emission features in SNe II spectra. In the case of the former, we studied early-time light curves and their relations to the pre-SN structure of H-rich envelopes of SN IIb progenitors and the CSM properties around SN IIP progenitors, and in the case of the latter, we took spectra of SN 2023ixf in near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths and analyzed them. Through studies encompassing both theoretical and observational aspects, we could point out previously overlooked factors and provide new insights on the studies of massive star evolution using SNe II and dust formation in SNe II, laying the groundwork for future studies. In the following paragraphs, brief summaries of each research topic and results are presented:
1. We investigate the effects of Thomson scattering and the chemical mixing in the ejecta on the numerical modelling of the optical first peak of double peaked SNe IIb LCs. SNe IIb are characterized by weak and quickly disappearing H lines, of which the progenitors are thought to have only a small amount of H-rich envelope ($M_{\rm H,env}\lesssim0.5$\msun) left after heavy mass-loss during their evolution. Previous studies used the rise-time and peak brightness of the optical first peak to infer the mass and radius of the H-rich envelope of SNe IIb progenitors. However, we show that not only mass and radius but also Thomson scattering and chemical mixing within the ejecta influence the properties of the optical first peak, e.g., the peak brightness, the rise-time, morphology of LCs around the first peak. First, we model SNe IIb LCs by exploding the same progenitor models with two numerical codes, \snec and \stella, both widely used in the previous studies. We find the peak brightness of the optical first peaks of the two models shows a factor of 3 difference. This difference stems from the black-body approximation adopted in the \snec code, which is not suitable for highly-ionized H-rich SN ejecta, where Thomson scattering is a major source of opacity. In addition, we notice a feature called ``semi-plateau'' that lasts for a few days in our optical LC models, during which the luminosity decline is significantly slowed. We find that this feature disappears when an extensive chemical mixing between the H-rich and He-rich layers in the SN ejecta is considered. However, at the same time, we find that, with an extensive mixing of the radioactive isotope \nifs, the LC models fail to reproduce the double peaked optical LCs.
2. We show that the optical LCs of SNe IIP interacting with dense CSM are also heavily affected by Thomson scattering. Shortly before the SN explosion, SNe II progenitors may undergo an enhanced mass-loss, forming dense CSM near the progenitors, which later interacts with SN ejecta to convert the kinetic energy to thermal energy, thus creating an excess of luminosity during the early days. Previous studies used the early optical excess to infer the mass and radius of CSM. However, we show that the estimated CSM properties may significantly depend on the treatment of Thomson scattering opacity. Specifically, we compare the best-fit CSM parameters for type II SN 2013ab obtained with \snec and \stella codes, and find a significant discrepancy. We find that, while the \snec code estimated a CSM radius of 900 $R_\odot$, which corresponds to the enhanced mass-loss beginning 8 months before the explosion, the \stella code estimate CSM radii of $2900-14400$ $R_\odot$, which correspond to $5-30$ years before the explosion. This means that an accurate simulation of SN LCs is important for a proper understanding of mass-loss enhancement history during the late stages of evolution in massive stars.
3. We obtain NIR spectra of type II SN 2023ixf and analyze CO and dust formation in the SNe II ejecta. The amount of dust estimated for CCSNe at a few hundred days after the explosion ($M_{d,{\rm SN}}\sim10^{-6}-10^{-4}$\msun) is much smaller than the amount of dust estimated for young supernova remnants ($M_{d,{\rm SNR}}\sim0.01-1$\msun). Observing and analyzing spectral features of coolant molecules, such as CO, which make the SN ejecta cool down to a temperature at which dust grains can be formed, can broaden our understanding of the exact dust formation process in SNe II. CO and dust emission can be simultaneously observed in the NIR wavelengths, which motivated us to perform NIR spectroscopy of SN 2023ixf from 9 to 307 days after the explosion. The late-time ($t\sim200-300$ d) NIR spectra of SN 2023ixf show continua flattened due to the dust emission along with the CO first overtone emission at $2.25-2.55$ $\mu$m. These spectral features are compared to models of dust and CO emission that assumed local thermodynamic equilibrium. We estimate the CO temperature, CO velocity, CO mass, dust temperature, and dust mass using spectral models. Our best-fit parameters are comparable to those estimated in previous studies for other SNe II, e.g., SN 1987A, with the exception of CO velocities being much faster than the others. We also find narrow (FWHM$\sim100-1000$~km~s$^{-1}$) emission lines in the early-time ($t=9-71$ d) spectra of SN 2023ixf, which originate from interaction between the SN ejecta and dense CSM near the progenitor.
