근대 학교운동회의 탄생: 화류에서 훈련과 경쟁으로 = The creation of modern school athletic meeting:from spring picnic(花柳) to discipline and competition

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This research was to analyze the appearance and development of modern school athletic meeting and catch hold of its educational characteristics in Korea, 1896~1904. The first school athletic meeting was started from spring picnic of National English School in May, 1896. At the same time, it appeared in elementary school, which had its early characteristics. After 1896, it had been diffused in Korea by being held periodically, introducing various competitive games and being open to the public. The seismic center was school athletic meeting of national and public schools in Seoul. It was performed in the form of national ritual, which was supported by government and The Independent Club. Students were disciplined to be a nation in it. At that time, the substantial contents of it were various modern competitive games. They began to be introduced and spread enough into Korea by it. Hutchison, National English School teacher, played an important role in the process. The competitive games, its competitive operational method, and mass media reports made students have competitive spirit. Consequently, new tradition of school athletic meeting was created in Korea. Students were educated to be a nation and competitive persons who were loyal to King and loved their state through it developed rapidly in 1896~1899. The fundamental motive of the creation of new tradition was ``equality`` that was kept in school athletic meeting.
