한국 다국적 기업의 글로벌 가치사슬 확장에 따른 지식기반제조업 파급효과 분석 = The Spillover Effect Analysis of Korean Multinational Enterprises` Global Value Chain Expansion on Knowledge-Based Manufacturing Industries

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper investigates how the global value chain (GVC) expansion of Korean multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the knowledge-based manufacturing industries brings positive spillover effects on the invigoration of domestic knowledge-based industries. Using the OECD/WTO trade in valueadded data and Korean firm level data covering the period between 2000 and 2009, this paper examines how the increases of Korean MNEs`` employment, net profits, and labor productivity due to the GVC expansion affect those of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in 20 disaggregated-level industries including the ICT manufacturing, state-of-the-arts, auto mobiles, and those of the whole industry. The empirical findings show that a 1% increase in net profits of MNEs increases the average net profits of SMEs in the knowledge-based manufacturing industry by 0.8%. These findings imply that Korean MNEs`` GVC expansion in the knowledge-based industries may affect the invigoration of SMEs`` business activities within the same industries. In particular, the value-added creation of Korean MNEs positively affects the average value being added and labor productivity of all firms in the knowledge-based industries. An increase in labor productivity of MNEs may increase the average labor productivity at the industry level. As a result GVC expansion of Korean MNEs may positively increase SMEs`` domestic employment within the same industry.
