As we move toward the 2013 General Assembly of World Council of Churches, which will be held in Pusan, South Korea, the Korean Church and Korean theology will have an opportunity to develop a renewed perception of mission and ecumenism. To prepare future it is important to remember the developments of the past. In this article I reflect upon the relationship between the theology of Karl Hartenstein and that of Karl Barth regarding missio Dei. This article reviews Barth`s influence both on the concept itself and the general theological development within mission in the ecumenical movement since the late 1920s. The concept missio Dei is based on the doctrine of the triune God. God`s sending of Jesus Christ and the Spirit is the origin of the missio Dei. God seeks to renew the whole of creation through the once-forall event of Jesus Christ. Therefore, the missio Dei is related to christology within a Trinitarian framework. We are called to participate in this dynamic process. Engaging in the missio Dei means not only doing evangelism, but also transforming the whole church and the worldwide community. God`s people are called to participate in the communitarian life of God. This article considers Barth`s doctrine of reconciliation found in IV/3, 69 in terms of the first article of the Barmen Declaration. Jesus is Victor, a theme Barth adopted from the theology of Johannes Christoph Blumhardt, is the focus of this section of the Church Dogmatics. The concept mission does not merely indicate the cause of cultural and geographical expansion. Mission begins with a real knowledge of Jesus as victor and as an infectious movement of hope and good news. An wholistic approach to missio Dei, instead of a dualistic one, will help to correct the tension and various misunderstandings which have characterized the relationship between those within the ecumenical tradition and those within evangelical tradition.
