Korean society has inherited and developed a family ideology based on the old tradition of "familism". However. familism in Korea has been contradic?tory in that open communication and close relationships between family members have not been practiced in reality. While cultural services due to industralization and commodification of leisure have increased enormously as a result of economic development, there is relatively little cultura] and societal 1eisure that involves active participation of family members. Given that Korean society is governed by a passive family leisure pattern, it is necessary to organize a culture of leisure that is active and fair for both genders by actualizing 'Resting and Working Together'. The main factors affecting family leisure in Korea are wives' housework obligations, male -centered corporate culture and long work hours, and children's excessive study hours. Accordingly, with family breakdown due to conflict and tension between genders as a pronounced societal issue, it is critical to foster female -friendly family leisure that helps maintain conjugal relations and shared roles.
