The purpose of this article is to empirically trace the history of Cheongma Yu Chi-hwan's photographic experiences and, based on this, to examine the process by which he formed his unique early poetic world. While Yu Chi-hwan's photographic experiences have received no attention in literary research to date, the experience with fine art photography by Hagiwara Sakutaro—which significantly influenced him during his studies in Japan—offers a clue to viewing his early poetry in a new light. Indeed, Sakutaro devoted himself to photography throughout his life to the extent that his work was compiled into a photobook posthumously, and based on this foundation, he pioneered a unique poetic world revolving around the self and nostalgia. Accordingly, this paper examines the relationship between the printed photographs left by Sakutaro and his poetic world, and aims to elucidate the unique aesthetics of Yu Chi-hwan's poetry by comparing and analyzing Sakutaro's poems with those of Yu Chi-hwan. More specifically, Yu Chi-hwan was influenced by the work of Sakutaro, who, in the context of portrait photography, discovered a self-image situated on the boundary between ideal and reality and sought to express it as a specific poetic subject. However, unlike Sakutaro, who represented a self in conflict and fracture between ideal and reality, Yu differed in that he sought to represent an independent self that did not compromise with vulgar reality. Furthermore, Yu Chi-hwan was influenced by the work of Sakutaro, who discovered a yearning for unattainable ideals in the realm of landscape photography and sought to express this through wandering and sorrow. However, unlike Sakutaro, who continued an impossible wandering toward a utopia, Yu sought to establish an existential identity by exploring the origins of life intertwined with the community. This article is significant not only for thoroughly revealing the reality of the photographic experiences involved in shaping Yu Chi-hwan's poetic world but also for examining the East Asian status traversed by his literature.
