『Dongbaek(柊栢)』 was one of the earliest literary magazines to appear in Daejeon during the Korean Liberation Period. Although its literary significance has long been recognized, its historiography has relied largely on secondary sources because no physical copies had been identified. This situation changed with the discovery of the first issue in 2018 and, more recently, the seventh issue in 2026. This study compares the bibliographical features of these two extant issues and reconstructs the publication history of 󰡔Dongbaek󰡕 on the basis of newly available evidence.
The literary coterie ‘Sihoe Dongbaek’ (Poetry Society Dongbaek), which served as the foundation for the magazine, was formed by young writers in Daejeon under the U.S. Military Government in 1946. This study demonstrates that its institutional base was ‘Gyeryong Haksuk’, a private educational institute established by Jeong Hun. Nevertheless, the publication dates and the total number of issues of 󰡔Dongbaek󰡕 have remained subjects of scholarly debate. By examining the two surviving issues alongside later documentary sources, this article first corrects several long-standing errors that have been repeatedly reproduced in the literary history of Daejeon and, second, argues that 󰡔Dongbaek󰡕 was published between May 1946 and March 1947. In particular, the newly discovered seventh issue provides decisive evidence that the poetry coterie magazine was published in seven installments through March 1947.
The article also reexamines the literary characteristics of poets active in Daejeon during the Liberation Period through the newly discovered issue. Whereas the first issue featured works by only three poets—Jeong Hun, Park Hui-seon, and Park Yong-rae—the seventh issue, published in a 20-page gukpan format, contains twenty poems, including early works by Lee Jae-bok, Nam Cheol-woo, Kim So-un, Seong Gi-won, Min Byeong-seong, and Ha Dong-ryeol, in addition to the original contributors. Furthermore, unlike the first issue, the seventh includes a table of contents, editorial information, introductions to the members of the literary coterie, and advertisements, offering valuable bibliographical evidence that enables a more comprehensive understanding of the literary culture of Daejeon during the Korean Liberation Period.
