This study aims to reconsider the hearer-honorific system of the Gyeongnam dialect by analyzing the aspects of the Hae(yo)-style that have appeared in the dialect since the twentieth century. Previous discussions of the hearer-honorific system of the Gyeongnam dialect have mainly focused on formal speech styles, while informal speech styles have received little attention. Accordingly, this study seeks to reestablish the hearer-honorific system of the Gyeongnam dialect by incorporating the Hae(yo)-style, an informal speech style, into the system.
To this end, Section 2 reviews previous studies on the hearer-honorific system of the Gyeongnam dialect. Although some studies have dealt with the Banmal-style, its status differs from that of the modern Hae(yo)-style. Since final endings of the Hae(yo)-style are actively used in the Gyeongnam dialect, it is necessary to explicitly establish the Hae(yo)-style within the dialect’s speech-level system. On this basis, the hearer-honorific of the Gyeongnam dialect is divided into two major categories: formal and informal speech styles. Meanwhile, in the Gyeongnam dialect, the final auxiliary particle -ye is not used in imperative forms. Therefore, if the speech level is labeled as the Haeye-style, it does not conform to the existing method of naming speech levels on the basis of imperative ending forms. For this reason, this study adopts the term Hae(yo)-style, following the terminology used for Central Korean language. In addition, the speech levels of the Gyeongnam dialect exhibit the following characteristics: the Haiso-style includes some endings corresponding to the Hasipsio-style of Central Korean language; the Haso-style is used more prominently than the Hao-style of Central Korean language; the Haera-style has a broader range of use than the Haera-style of Central Korean language; and the Hae-style can be divided into standard-language forms and dialectal forms according to aspects of intonational realization.
Section 3 examines final endings characteristic of the Gyeongnam dialect. Focusing on their usage aspects, this study confirms that –georo, -n gira, and -n gabe are realized as forms of the Hae-style; -dakai and -ae as forms of the Haera-style; and -n gyo as a form of the Haso-style. In addition, the final ending -ji has differentiated into -ji and -je, and this differentiation involves not only form and function but also speech level. Through this analysis, the position of the Hae(yo)-style within the hearer-honorific system of the Gyeongnam dialect is clarified.
Finally, Section 4 presents a revised hearer-honorific system of the Gyeongnam dialect that includes the Hae(yo)-style. For speech levels that have been classified differently in previous studies, this study identifies their synchronic structure and readjusts their classification according to consistent criteria.
