Equipment arrangement design in ship engine rooms is a complex process requiring the efficient placement of numerous critical components including propulsion systems and auxiliary machinery within a confined space. The arrangement process must simultaneously consider various design factors such as clearance distances between equipment, maintenance accessibility, and piping route connectivity. However, in conventional design approaches, despite the accumulation of past equipment arrangement data, systematic methods for utilizing this data are lacking, resulting in inefficiencies where designers must repeatedly perform manual work from scratch. In this study, historical ship engine room layout data was systematically analyzed to derive arrangement patterns for each equipment type, and an Intelligent Integrated Template Model was developed by integrating designer experiential knowledge and standard design rules utilizing Knowledge Based Engineering(KBE) techniques. Additionally, a three-dimensional layout verification function was implemented utilizing Virtual Reality technology. The developed system was applied to the arrangement of 30 pieces of equipment in the Purifier room of a 173K LNG carrier, confirming high similarity with actual design outcomes and demonstrating its potential to improve design efficiency and shorten ship construction schedules.
