Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a key sensing technology for automotive autonomous driving systems. A LiDAR sensor employs a 905 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser and detects surrounding vehicles by measuring the time required for the reflected light to return to the receiver. However, black-colored vehicles, which strongly absorb NIR radiation, attenuate the incident LiDAR laser and consequently suffer from reduced detectability. Conventional black automotive pigments are primarily based on carbon black, which exhibits broadband absorption not only in the visible region but also across the NIR. As a result, carbon-black–based coatings not only diminish LiDAR recognition performance but also absorb a significant portion of solar irradiation—particularly the NIR component that accounts for approximately 52% of total solar energy—leading to rapid temperature increases on vehicle exteriors. This thermal accumulation ultimately increases the load on the air-conditioning system, thereby reducing fuel efficiency. Accordingly, the development of NIR-reflective black coatings is technologically and environmentally important, as it enhances the reliability of LiDAR-assisted autonomous driving while simultaneously mitigating heat build-up on vehicle surfaces to improve energy efficiency and sustainability. One viable approach is grounded in color-science principles: a black appearance can be achieved when a material absorbs across the entire visible spectrum. By combining organic colorants capable of absorbing all visible wavelengths, a visually black coating can be produced while maintaining high transmittance in the NIR region. The transmitted NIR light subsequently reaches an underlying reflective layer and is efficiently redirected back toward the LiDAR sensor, enabling reliable detection.
In general, organic pigments absorb specific regions of the visible spectrum through electronic transitions from the ground to excited states. Based on this principle, black coloration can be achieved by mixing the three primary color pigments to cover the entire visible range. However, yellow pigments inherently possess relatively small chromophores and short π-conjugated frameworks, which cause thermal energy to be highly localized within the molecular structure. This structural limitation fundamentally lowers their thermal stability by facilitating oxidation, sublimation, and decomposition reactions at elevated temperatures. Moreover, the direct absorption of high-energy UV and blue light present in natural sunlight further promotes photodegradation from the excited state, resulting in poor photostability of yellow pigments. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of coumarin-based dyes to overcome the intrinsically low thermal and photostability of yellow colorants, thereby enabling the development of NIR-reflective black coatings with stable optical properties under light and heat exposure. The designed dyes exhibit an extended π-conjugation at the 2-position of the coumarin core, and their photostability, thermal stability, and spectroscopic characteristics were systematically investigated based on their molecular structures and crystallographic packing. Ultimately, we propose a molecular design for benzylcyanocoumarin pigments that exhibit spectrally black absorption with excellent NIR reflectivity, high thermal robustness, and outstanding photostability—all achieved using a single organic pigment.
In Chapter 2, benzylcyanocoumarin-based dyes were designed and synthesized to improve the inherently low photo- and thermal stability of conventional yellow pigments. Benzylcyanide was introduced at the 2-position of 7-aminocoumarin to enhance molecular planarity, while trifluoromethyl (CF3) and cyano (CN) substituents were incorporated to modulate the electronic structure, thereby achieving red-shifted absorption bands and increased molar absorptivity. Compared with the parent coumarin, the synthesized dyes exhibited significantly enhanced thermal robustness, as evidenced by higher decomposition temperatures and elevated phase-transition temperatures. Under UV irradiation, spectroscopic and chromatographic analyses revealed that the dyes dissipated the absorbed UV energy not through irreversible pathways such as bond scission or oxidation, but through a reversible structural relaxation mechanism driven by E/Z photoisomerization. The nearly identical absorption spectra of the E and Z isomers ensured minimal spectral change during irradiation, resulting in excellent photostability. When incorporated into film form, the dyes maintained low color differences even after prolonged UV exposure, confirming their outstanding color retention and long-term stability. These results demonstrate that the designed dyes possess the necessary durability and optical performance to serve as high-reliability, functional organic materials for advanced photonic and coating applications.
In Chapter 3, the substituents on the amino group of the designed dyes were systematically varied to investigate the correlation among molecular planarity, solid-state aggregation, and thermal stability, while retaining the intrinsic E/Z photoisomerization behavior. The results revealed that the structural characteristics at the single-molecule level directly translated into the aggregation modes in the solid state. As the molecular framework became more extended, the π–π interactions and effective intermolecular contact area increased, thereby enhancing thermal stability. Amino substituents with high conformational flexibility, such as methyl and ethyl groups, exhibited thermal sublimation behavior at elevated temperatures. In contrast, sterically constrained cyclic amino substituents displayed a sequential thermal decomposition pathway, beginning with cleavage at the central C=C bond followed by pyrone-ring degradation. The synthesized dyes enabled black coloration using only two pigments—combined with a nano dispersed blue pigment—rather than the conventional three-primary-pigment approach. This binary coloration strategy allowed full visible absorption and simultaneous NIR transmission, resulting in high LiDAR reflectivity. The E/Z photoisomerization mechanism remained operative in the film state, providing excellent photostability. However, because the dyes existed primarily in a molecularly dispersed form within the coating, the aggregation-derived thermal robustness was not manifested, and the thermal stability in films consequently varied depending on molecular structure.
In Chapter 4, a new black benzylcyanocoumarin pigment was designed and synthesized by introducing a nitro (NO2) group into the conventional benzylcyanocoumarin framework, building on previous findings regarding the synergistic combination of a julolidine-type electron donor and a strong electron-withdrawing group. The incorporation of the nitro substituent reinforced π–π conjugation and molecular planarity, enabling long-wavelength absorption in solution. In the solid state, the pigment further exhibited J-aggregate–type packing, which induced an additional red-shift in the absorption band and produced a black aggregate structure characterized by low reflectance across the entire visible spectrum. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and intermolecular interaction energy calculations revealed that DcyBCC–NO2 exhibits stronger π–π interactions and a higher crystal packing density than DcyBCC–CN, resulting in markedly improved thermal and photostability in the solid state. When incorporated into a water-based binder to prepare a bilayer black coating, the pigment displayed excellent durability, maintaining low color differences and stable NIR reflectance under accelerated UV irradiation and thermal aging at 120 °C. The resulting coating achieved more than a 14-fold enhancement in 905 nm reflectance compared to a commercial carbon-black coating, along with significantly improved LiDAR point-cloud intensity. Notably, LiDAR detectability remained stable even under increased tilt angles, suggesting substantial improvement in sensing reliability when applied to vehicles with complex curved surfaces. Additionally, under NIR irradiation, the coating reduced the surface temperature by more than 40 °C relative to a commercial black coating, confirming its superior heat sheilding capability. Collectively, these results demonstrate that DcyBCC–NO₂ represents a final optimized pigment in which molecular-structure and packing-based stability design strategies are effectively integrated. The pigment enables the realization of a durable black color using a single organic pigment while simultaneously achieving high LiDAR visibility and outstanding thermal-shielding performance, underscoring its strong potential as an advanced functional organic black pigment.
