This study aimed to identify the healing symbols used in Sandplay therapy by child and adolescent survivors of sexual trauma, and explore the themes and meanings behind them. The participants consisted of 25 children and adolescents, aged 7 to 17, who had received individual Sandplay therapy. Each participant underwent between 16 and 32 therapy sessions, depending on their individual needs. Detailed handwritten records were kept throughout the process, along with photographs of 236 sandpictures. The collected materials were analyzed and categorized by symbols and their associated themes. Four main themes emerged: “Destroyer,” “Punishment,” “Purification,” and “Protection,” each representedby specific symbols. Through the symbolic healing process of Sandplay therapy, children and adolescent survivors of sexual trauma were able to represent their traumatic experiences while maintaining a safe distance from the trauma itself, which facilitated a gradual healing process.
