한국 영화 제작현장의 성차별 구조: 독립영화계 연출 직군 여성들의 경험을 중심으로 = Systematic Gender Discrimination and Marginalization of Women: Female Directors’ Experiences in the Korean Independent Film Industry

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper explores how gender inequalities in the Korean film industry are re/produce, analyzing the labor experiences of women in the independent film production. Women in the Korean film industry are surrounded by gender division of labor, gendered hierarchy, gendered reputation economy, gendered understanding of ‘skills’ and ‘professionalism’, and gender wage gap. Combined with the fundamental problem of the poor labor environment of the independent film production, where even making a living is difficult, female directors feel threatened for their survival. In addition, in a strong male-centered network, female directors who lack resources and/or network cannot get an ‘approval’ for their careers and are excluded from participation in commercial film projects, awards at film festivals, support for and investment for film production, etc. Nevertheless, women in the film industry are struggling to survive themselves and to change the film production site and the Korean film industry through daily practice, solidarity, and feminist network building
