This study aimed to investigate the effect of physical self-efficacy on smartphone overdependence among middle school students and to examine the mediating effect of emotion regulation ability in this relationship. A survey was conducted on 368 middle school students from eight schools in D Metropolitan City. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and the PROCESS macro (Model 4). The validity and reliability of the research instruments were confirmed through exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach’s α coefficient. The relationships between variables were examined using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The significance of the mediating effect was verified using the bootstrapping method. The analysis results showed that all sub-factors of physical self-efficacy had a significant negative(-) effect on smartphone overdependence. Furthermore, emotion regulation ability significantly mediated the relationship between physical self-efficacy and smartphone overdependence. These findings suggest that to mitigate smartphone overdependence in middle school students, an educational approach is needed to enhance physical self-efficacy as well as improve emotion regulation ability.
