The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of college students' conflict management types and communication competence on communication satisfaction and to examine whether communication self-efficacy mediates this relationship. A survey was conducted with students participating in liberal arts courses at universities near Seoul, and the collected data was analyzed to address the research questions.
The main analysis methods used were multiple regression analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. In the first step, the impact of conflict management types (integration strategy, confrontation strategy, avoidancstrategy) and communication competence (relational competence, interpersonal competence, linguistic competence) on communication satisfaction was analyzed, considering demographic variables. In the second step, the mediating effect of communication self-efficacy was analyzed.
The study found that gender and age did not have a significant effect on communication satisfaction, whereas conflict management types and communication competence were identified as key factors. Among the conflict management types, the integrative strategy positively influenced communication satisfaction, while the confrontational and avoidance
strategies negatively affected it.
All three elements of communication competence (relational competence, interpersonal competence, linguistic competence) positively influenced communication satisfaction. The findings indicated that relational competence, interpersonal competence, and linguistic competence all played important roles in enhancing communication satisfaction. In particular, relational and interpersonal competence enabled effective communication with others, while linguistic competence contributed to increasing the accuracy and effectiveness
of communication, thus enhancing communication satisfaction.
Communication self-efficacy was found to play a crucial mediating role in the relationship between conflict management types, communication competence, and communication satisfaction. The integration strategy wasshown to enhance communication self-efficacy, providing an indirect path to improving communication satisfaction. In contrast, the confrontation and avoidance strategies diminished communication self-efficacy, which negatively affected communication satisfaction. These results highlight the importance of communication self-efficacy in enhancing communication satisfaction. Moreover, communication self-efficacy plays a key role in mitigating the negative effects of confrontation and avoidance strategies.
Lastly, relational competence, interpersonal competence, and linguistic competence all had a significant impact on communication self-efficacy and communication satisfaction. Relational and interpersonal competence acted as important factors in enhancing communication self-efficacy, contributing to improved communication satisfaction. Linguistic competence also played a crucial role in enhancing communication self-efficacy and increasing communication satisfaction. This study suggests that communication self-efficacy is a key variable in enhancing communication competence and communication satisfaction and emphasizes the importance of strategic approaches to strengthening conflict management strategies and communication competence.
