The expert in pulmonary medicine knows the value of tests of pulmonary function in determining the significance of chronic limitaton of airflow as a possible cause of symtoms and the patient's ability to withstand surgical procedures.
We must encourage the use of the spirometer as part of the routine examination of nearly all adult patients. Despite the theoretical problems of the water spirometer and its poor frequency response, the water spirometer is adequate for the physiological function tests even in healthy people.
The aim of this study was to report the effect of Danjeun respiration on the pulmonary function tests related to ages. Danjeun respiration which contains various courses is an abdominal respiration.
Such a respiration is important for Guksundo. From the many earlier studies in this field, there are many studies on the thoracic respiration. But there appear to be rare studies on the abdominal respiration.
Subjects were 152 healthy men from 20 to 55 years of age in the course of Guksundo.
The results obtained were as follows.
1) Frequency of breath : (cycles/. min, M±S.D)
Represented 14.0±3.5 at the age of 20~24 years, 13.0±2.5 at the age of 20~29 years, 12.0±1.5 at the age of 30~34 years, 12.0±1.9 at the age of 35~39 years, 12.0±4.3 at the age of 40~44 years, 13.0±3.2 at the age of 45~49 years and 12.0±3.6 at the age of 50~55 years.
2) Vital capacity : (㎖, M±S.D)
Represented 3,800±354 at the age of 20~24 years, 4, 880±926 at the age of 25±29 years, 4,460±702 at the age of 30~34 years, 3,600±303 at the age of 35~39 years and 2,775±758 at the age of 50~55 years.
3) Tidal volume : (㎖, M±S.D)
Represented 476±82 at the age of 20~24 years, 776±186 at the age of 25~29 years, 525±93 at the age of 30~34 years, 494±77 at the age of 35~39, 505±42 at tlie age of 40~44 years, 456±47 at the age of 45~49 years and 426±50 at the of 50~55 years.
4) Breath holding time : (sec, M±S.D)
Represented 54±15 at the age of 20~24 years, 73±24 at the age of 25~29 years, 100±40 at the age of 30-34 years, 60±21 at the age of 35~39 years, 51±13 at the age of 40~44 years, 45±9 at the age of 45~49 years and 53±20 at the age of 50~55 years.
