The multidimensional and time-extended nature of pain fundamentally requires a systems-level perspective that overcomes the temporal constraints inherent in conventional, stimulus-locked neuroimaging analyses. To fully characterize the holistic spatiotemporal evolution from acute pain onset to its subsequent resolution, we employed an experimental paradigm with an extended inter-trial interval (60 seconds after stimulus offset) and leveraged Group Independent Component Analysis (GICA) on fMRI data from 60 participants. Our analysis revealed affective-cognitive networks (IC-11 and IC-12) that encode pain intensity continuously from the pre-stimulus anticipation period into the extended post-stimulus phase, suggesting a mechanism for sustained intensity monitoring and contextual evaluation that is obscured by transient models. Crucially, time-resolved functional connectivity analysis demonstrated that the shift toward recovery is characterized by the active emergence of networks associated with emotional disengagement (IC-10) and post-stimulus monitoring (IC-20), as evidenced by a significant increase in the edge sum of these components during the Early Post-Stimulus Relief phase. This pattern clearly establishes that acute pain and its relief are not merely a passive response against stimulus, but a spatiotemporal, holistic process mediated by the active recruitment and reconfiguration of multiple networks.
