네빌 브로디의 실험적 타이포그래피에 나타난 기호학적 의미작용에 관한 연구 : 「FUSE」지의 표지를 중심으로 = Study on the symbolic meaning function of Neville Brody's exprimental typography : centered aroud 『FUSE』magazine covers

국문 초록 (Abstract)

실험적 타이포그래피를 분석하고 기호학적으로 접근하는 것이 어떤 의미가 있는가?
정보전달에 일어나는 모든 것들을 설명하기위해 사용하는 기호, 코드가 바로 전부 언어이다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 타이포그래피가 단지 문자의 기술의 문제가 아닌 언어의 문제이며 또한 그 언어는 일종의 계약이고 관계의 문제라는 사실을 이해해야하고, 정보전달에 있어서 실험적 타이포그래피가 언어기호의 집합체 혹은 기호체계로 이해하고 분석하는데 가치가 있다고 생각한다.
이에 정보전달에 빼놓을 수 없는 타이포그래피 중에서도 실험적 타이포그래피를 표현유형의 자연적기호가 아닌 인간의 부분적 혹은 전체적 의도를 지닌 하나의 개인기호로 구성된 의미담지체로서 결과물을 인식하고 그 의미체계를 기호학적으로 분석한다. 또한 네빌 브로디의 작품에 나타난 실험적 타이포그래피는 타이포그래피의 오래되고 정형화되어 있었던 오래된 습성을 깨고 창조적이고 실험적이며 유희적인 타이포그래피의 한 표현으로 정보 전달로서 수용자의 의미전달의 의미작용과 효과를 알아본다.

본 연구에서 다루어질 네빌 브로디의 작품에 나타난 실험적 타이포그래피 『FUSE』의 기호학적 분석은 기호학의 다양한 이론의 틀 가운데 롤랑 바르트의 의미생성이론을 직접적인 방법론으로 제시하고 이에 실험적 타이포그래피의생성과 기호학의 개념을 이해하고, 롤랑 바르트의 의미생성이론에서의 분석모형을 도출, 분석을 실시한다.
여기에서 중요한 것은 실험적 타이포그래피에서의 언어와 시각적 요소에서 파생되는 외시의미(denotation)와 함축의미(connotation)를 살펴본 다음, 롤랑 바르트가 제안한 신화론(Mythologies)을 적용하여 작품이 의도하는 최종적인 의도를 이해하고, 그 의도로서 실험적 타이포그래피가 어떤 유형의 표현 방법을 적용하였으며, 그 펀의 적용이 디자이너와 수용자가 양측모두 시각화하고 언어적으로 이해할 수 있는 합의된 요소로서 표현하였는지에 대하여 이해하는 것이다. 따라서 분석모델을 통해서 ’신화‘를 밝히는 것은 작품의 형식과 내용을 결정짓는 요소는 무엇인지 살피는 과정이자 인간의 언어활동 즉 정보전달의 효율성을 알아보는 분석의 관점을 형성하기 위한 좋은 예가 될 것이다.

타이포그래피의 실험적이고 창의적인 시각은 절실히 필요하며, 정보전달에 있어서 실험적 타이포그래피는 의미전달 도구로서 강하게 자리 잡고 있다. 또한 실험적 타이포그래피는 타이포그래피의 미래지향적, 실험적 표현수단의 담론으로 충분한 가능성이 있다고 생각된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

What does it mean to analyze experimental typography and approaching it through the semiotics?
Symbols and codes being used to explain all the things related to information communication constitute language. In this study, we consider the typography not as a mere letters' technical issue but as a language issue, and we should also understand that the language is a kind of contract and relationship, and in information communication it is worthwhile to understand and analyze experimental typography as a collective entity of linguistic symbols or as a symbolic system.
In this regard, among the typographies, which are indispensable information communication means, experimental typography is recognized not as natural symbols for expression, but as a bearer of meanings composed of individualized symbols bearing the human's partial or entire intention, and its meaning system is analyzed through the semiotics. Also, experimental typography appearing on Neville Brody's works shattered the traditional customs of old and rigid typography, presenting creative, experimental, and playful typography as a means to communicate information, and in this regard, the function and the effect of such a communication means on the viewers are to be studied.
Semiotic analysis of this study on the experimental typography of Neville Brody appearing on 'Fuse' presents the Roland Barthes's meaning-creation theory as the direct methodology among various theoretical frameworks, and would help understanding the creation of the experimental typography and the semiotics concept, and a analytic model of Roland Barthes's meaning-creation theory is derived and analyzed.
Important here are to review denotation and connotation derived from the experimental typography's linguistic and visual elements, to interpret the ultimate intention of the work by applying the mythologies suggested by Roland Barthes, and to find out what kind of expressive method the experimental typography were employed, and to find out whether the application of the method expressed in visualizing and linguistic elements is mutually agreeable by both the designers and the viewers.
Accordingly, analyzing 'Mythologies' through the analytic model is a process of investigating the elements defining the forms and the contents of the works, and also will constitute a good example of establishing the analytic viewpoint for finding out the efficiency in terms of human language activities, that is, information communication.
The experimental and creative viewpoint of typography is essentially necessary, and the experimental typography has its legitimate position as a tool for communicating the intentions in the information communication. Also, the experimental typography has a solid potential as a discourse for the typography as futuristic and experimental expressive means.
