성역할 태도와 우울 = Gender Role Attitude and Depressive Symptoms : Comparisons across Gender and Age Groups

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 성역할 태도가 우울에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 검증하고 이러한 성역할 태도의 효과가 성별과 연령에 따라 다르게 나타나는지를 분석하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 서울에 거주하는 20~40대의 남녀를 대상으로 조사를 실시하였으며 분석방법으로는 다변량 회귀분석을 이용하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 성역할 태도와 우울증 간의 유의한 관계를 보여주었다. 응답자가 전통적인 성역할 태도를 가질수록 우울이 증가하였다. 그러나 이러한 성역할 태도의 효과는 성별, 연령집단별로 다르게 나타났다. 먼저, 전통적인 성역할 태도는 여성보다 오히려 남성의 우울에 더 부정적인 효과를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 전통적인 성역할 태도는 남성의 우울을 높이는 스트레스 요인으로 작용하지만, 성역할 태도는 여성의 우울에는 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 마지막으로 성별, 연령집단 별 하위집단 비교분석을 실시해본 결과, 성역할 태도의 부정적 효과는 20대와 30대 남성에게만 나타났으며, 여성과 40대 남성에게는 나타나지 않았다. 이러한 결과는 상식적인 예상과는 달리 한국에서 전통적인 성역할 태도가 청년층 남성의 정신건강에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 의미한다. 본 연구에서는 전통적인 성역할 태도와 2, 30대 남성의 우울증의 관계를 역할기대와 성역할 태도 간의 긴장과 관련하여 논의한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to examine the relationship between gender role attitude and depressive symptoms and analyze if and how gender role attitude has differential effects across gender and age groups. Respondents in 20s to 40s participated in the survey. The findings show that there is a significant relationship between gender role attitude and depressive symptoms. Respondents who have traditional gender role attitude are more likely to have depressive symptoms than others. The differential effects of gender role attitude across gender and age groups are also detected. Traditional gender role attitude has a deleterious effect on depressive symptoms for males, not for females. Moreover, subsample analyses by gender and age show that the deleterious effects of traditional gender role attitude are significant only for males in 20s and 30s whereas there is no significant effect of gender role attitude for males in 40s and all females. In conclusion, we discuss the findings in relation to role expectation and strains.
