This study aims to analyze the application of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the performance creation process and examine its significance. In recent years, generative AI has been utilized in various creative fields, including text, images, music, and video, bringing changes to artistic creation. Accordingly, this study explores how generative AI can function not merely as a tool but also intervene in the creative process and serve as a collaborative medium in the field of performing arts.
As the research method, this study adopted an approach combining a theoretical review with a practical creative experiment. First, cases of AI applications in the performing arts were analyzed. Based on this analysis, the researcher produced the immersive performance 〈S.H.O.W〉. The performance was developed using a devising theatre approach, and generative AI was utilized throughout the entire performance creation process. In particular, generative AI was applied to text development, visual content production, music composition, and video production, and a real-time audience participation-based content generation structure was designed.
The findings indicate that generative AI functioned as a tool that expanded and refined the creator's thinking during idea generation, draft creation, and iterative revision, while also serving as a collaborative partner by providing diverse alternatives. However, limitations such as the non-deterministic nature of AI-generated outputs and AI hallucinations were also identified. Accordingly, the findings confirm that an understanding of AI literacy is essential in the creative process utilizing generative AI and that human creators' intervention in critically reviewing, selecting, and revising AI-generated outputs is indispensable.
Furthermore, the real-time use of generative AI based on audience participation enhanced the liveness and immersion of the performance. The structure, in which audience responses were immediately transformed into images and music and incorporated into the performance, provided an experience distinct from conventional performances and demonstrated the potential for audiences to move beyond the role of passive spectators and function as active participants in the process of performance composition.
Overall, this study confirms that generative AI can function not merely as a supportive tool but as a collaborative partner capable of restructuring the creative framework of the performance creation process. These findings suggest future directions for the use of AI in the performing arts and highlight the need for further discussion regarding the division of roles between human creators and AI, as well as creative ethics.
