사회구성주의와 자연 = 제주의 자연과 한라산 야생노루 사례

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회구성주의는 사회학 이론의 한 차원으로 사회실재론에 대별되는 패러다임으로서 사회학에 오랫동안 자리를 잡고 있었다. 그러나 사회구성주의가 환경사회학 이론으로서 등장한 것은 1990년대이다. 존 해니건과 스티브 이얼리 등 환경사회학자들은 환경지식과 환경문제의 사회구성적 속성을 지적하며 그 당시 환경사회학의 지배적인 패러다임이었던 환경문제 실재론에 반기를 들었다. 사회구성주의자들이 주장하는 것은, 자연환경문제가 형성되는 데에는 과학자들의 지식이 절대적이나 과학자들의 지식은 그 자체로 불확정적인 한편 과학자 공동체 안의 합의로 볼 수 있다는 것이다. 따라서 환경사회학자가 해야 할 일도 객관적 실체로서 환경문제의 존재를 전제로 환경문제와 사회와의 인과적 연결고리를 만들 것이 아니라, 특정한 환경적 사안/문제가 어떻게 관심을 끌게 되는 지 그 과정을 탐사해야 한다고 주장했다. 이 글은 맥락적 사회구성주의 관점에 근거해 한국사회에서 그동안 제주의 자연과 한라산 야생노루에 대해서 말하는 방식이 크게 달라진 점을 분석했다. 제주의 자연과 한라산 야생노루의 의미를 규정하는 데에 관여한 핵심 행위자와 그들의 진술을 분석했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper studies social constructionist views on environmental problems. The social constructionist perspective emerged in the 1990s in environmental sociology as a competing paradigm against the social realist perspective for understanding environmental problems. This paper clarifies the contours of social constructionist views to environmental issues by locating it within the broader theoretical terrains of environmental sociology. This paper further examines the two cases of Jeju Island’s nature and Halla mountain’s wildlife deer drawing upon the contextual approach of social constructionist perspective. The two cases present interesting points for social constructionist analysis in that the two issues have seen significant transformations in meaning makings. For Jeju Island’s nature, the discourse transformation indicates Jeju Island from the land in poverty with infertile natural conditions to the land in purity blessed with natural attractions; and for wildlife deer, it involves discourse change from beloved animal creatures that should be preserved to the animals exerting damage to the island’s agricultural households, accordingly to be caught (and put down) until the number of species are stabilized. Key players and their statements that are involved in defining the meanings of Jeju Island’s nature and the wildlife deer as such are examined.
