다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study was aimed to construct appropriate teaching materials in order to aid academic students in the pursuit of successfully completing their studies. Overseas students who make up the majority of those in Korean language education study with specialized, field-specific materials and need to be attended to in order to ensure that they are properly handling their studies. They are also burdened with the fact that they have to study Korean, a foreign language, while studying the major of their choice.
In order to achieve this, to facilitate the study of a major field of education in a foreign language, Korean Language Education with an academic purpose was the major subject chosen for this study. This study looked at this problem from a perspective of providing academic aid by using appropriate study materials to teach them the language and the knowledge simultaneously. This study aims to deal with these problems and feels the need to develop appropriate educational materials for them.
These students don’t have many problems in everyday situations, but tend to show difficulties when starting their major studies. Humanitarian, social and business related subjects have had a comparatively high amount of research done related to their language aspects. As the number of overseas students wanting to specialize their majors in Korea, the fact of the matter is that the demand for materials for language education is on the rise while there is a continued lack in supply, and this is also true for natural science majors. Therefore this study aimed to find a remedial solution to overcome the difficulties in studying natural sciences, with respect to the fact that the number of natural science majors is on the rise and that there is a definite need for an answer to this problem. The study can be regarded as the beginning to the development and search of effective materials that can help students to utilize Korean while studying, and suggested a new research method by introducing the concept of “Prerequisite Academic Korean Vocabulary”
Prerequisite has the meaning of an occurrence happening precedent to another, and is used as a term to describe prerequisite education or learning. This study redefines the concept of prerequisite academic Korean vocabulary, meaning vocabulary that can aid in major studies.
In order to achieve this, Chapter I clarified the necessity and purpose of the study and took a look into other relative studies and research paper. Papers on Korean language education processes for academic purposes and research papers on the needs of said students were studied and analyzed focusing on the purpose of this study, after which, research related to major specific vocabulary selection was analyzed. Previous studies have shown that the variety of research into the matter has increased but there is still a lack in discussions to provide a solution to overcome the issue. Therefore, by analyzing the needs of students majoring in natural sciences, educational materials to aid them in achieving their academic purpose can be developed.
Chapter II observed the overall concept of academically purposed Korean language education and viewed its changes over time. Changes in vocabulary education, and the purpose and method of education were identified. Since students speak of difficulties in major studies, resolving their problems are of the utmost priority. Based on the findings, a new concept of “Prerequisite Academic Korean Vocabulary” was introduced. “Prerequisite Academic Korean Vocabulary” carries the purpose to be used as a tool to be used as a bridge for students to succeed in their major studies.
Chapter III analyzed the needs of natural science majors to clarify their academic needs, the academic differences between Korean students and overseas students, and the difficulties in major studies. Participants were invited to take part in a preliminary survey, a main survey and an interview, and using the results of the needs analysis and the vocabulary classification index from chapter II were utilized to construct a method and standard to select the academic Korean vocabulary.
The contents of chapter III were compiled in chapter IV to finalize the list of prerequisite vocabulary for natural science majors studying in Korea. It also suggested plans and methods for the practical real-world use of the compiled vocabulary.
Chapter V was focused on resolving problems for overseas students majoring in natural science in Korea using the compiled vocabulary and on suggesting the need to compile educational materials for various different major fields.
This study was focused on identifying the difficulties students have in successfully studying their majors and to resolve these problems. Needs analysis was conducted to clarify the issues while the results were used to compile educational materials for the same purpose. As specialized major studies increase, the number of students wanting to specialize in these fields are also increasing, and the educational processes are also changing to follow suit. For this, understanding what is to be taught was highly necessary, and according to the findings, a list of educational materials for overseas students majoring in natural science was compiled which gives high hopes for it to be used as a useful tool in the future.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 성공적인 학업 수행에 목적을 둔 학문 목적 학습자의 다양한 전공 분야에 대응할 수 있는 교육 자료를 구축하는 데 목적이 있다. 한국어 교육에서 많은 부분을 차지하는 유학생은 대학에서 전문적인 분야를 학습하게 되므로 그들이 학교 안에서 자기 수업을 제대로 수행할 수 있는지 살펴보아야 한다. 또한 학문 목적 학습자는 자연스럽게 자신이 선택한 전공 지식과 더불어 한국어 학습까지 병행해야 하는 부담을 갖고 있다. 그러므로 언어적 문제를 고려하여 전공 학습을 가능하게 하기 위한 교육이 본고에서 대상으로 삼은 학문 목적 한국어 교육의 한 부분이라 보았다. 학문 목적 학습자는 성공적인 학업 수행의 교육 목표에 맞게 교육 방법이 변화되고 새로운 틀의 교육과정이 도입되고 있다. 그렇다면 본고는 이들을 위해 어떠한 교육 자료를 활용해 학습에 도움을 줄 수 있는가의 관점으로 바라보았다. 언어를 알게 하고 지식을 알게 하는 이 두 가지를 교육하는 것이 학문 목적 학습자를 위한 교육으로 보았다. 본고는 이에 해당하는 교육 자료의 필요성을 느끼고 이를 다루고자 한다.
학문 목적 학습자들은 일상적인 생활에서 큰 어려움이 없지만 본격적인 전공 수업을 시작할 때 대체로 어려움을 토로하고 있다. 실제로 인문, 사회, 경영계열의 전공 어휘 선정 연구는 타 계열에 비해 지금까지 많은 양의 연구들이 진행되었음을 확인 할 수 있었다. 국내 대학에서 다양한 영역을 전문적으로 학습하고자 하는 유학생은 매년 증가하고 이와 마찬가지로 자연과학계열의 학습자도 꾸준히 증가하는 데 반해 학습에 도움을 줄 수 있는 교육 자료는 여전히 부족한 실정이다. 그러므로 본고는 자연과학계열을 전공하는 유학생의 증가에 따라 이에 대응할 수 있는 교육 자료가 마련되어야 함을 연구 문제로 보고 그들의 상황을 고려하여 학업의 어려움을 극복할 수 있는 처방적 차원의 방법을 모색하고자 한다. 이때 성공적인 전공 수업을 수행할 수 있는 실질적으로 활용 가능한 교육 자료가 필요한데 본고는 그 시작을 하고자 한다. 이에 본고는 ‘선행 한국어 학습어휘’의 개념을 도입해 새로운 연구 방법을 제시하였다.
선행 한국어 학습어휘의 ‘선행’은 시간적인 차원에서 먼저 일어나는 것을 뜻하며 주로 선행학습의 의미로 활용되어 사용한다. 본고에서는 이를 응용하여 ‘선행 한국어 학습어휘’의 개념을 새롭게 정의하였다. ‘선행 한국어 학습어휘’는 이미 알고 있거나 새로 배우는 것으로 미리 알고 있으면 전공 학습에 도움이 되는 어휘를 뜻한다.
이를 위해 Ⅰ장에서는 연구의 목적과 필요성을 밝히고 이와 관련된 선행 연구들을 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 목적에 맞게 학문 목적 한국어 교육과정 및 학습자 요구 분석에 관한 기존의 연구들을 분석하고 이후 다양한 전공 영역별 어휘 선정과 관련 된 연구를 자세히 살펴보았다. 앞선 연구들을 통해 학문 목적 한국어 교육에 대한 연구가 다양해짐을 확인 할 수 있었으나 그들의 궁극적인 문제를 해소시킬 수 있는 논의가 아직까지는 부족하다고 볼 수 있다. 이에 본고에서 중점을 두고 있는 자연과학계열 학습자의 요구분석을 통해 그들의 문제점을 확인하고 그들의 성공적인 학업 수행의 목표를 도달하기 위해 활용 가능한 교육 자료가 필요하다. 본고는 그 시작을 하였다.
Ⅱ 장에서는 학문 목적 한국어 교육의 개념을 살펴보고 어떻게 변화되고 있는지 살펴보았다. 다양해진 학문 목적 한국어 교육에 따라 어휘 교육은 어떠한 방향으로 변화되고 있는지, 교육 목표, 교육 방법은 어떻게 변화되고 있는지 확인하였다. 학문 목적 학습자의 경우 전공 수업의 어려움을 대체로 토로하기 때문에 문제를 해결하기 위한 것이 가장 급선무이다. 이를 바탕으로 본고는 ‘선행 한국어 학습어휘’의 개념을 새롭게 도입하였다. ‘선행 한국어 학습어휘’는 학문 목적 학습자가 본격적인 전공 수업에 가교 역할을 위한 도구로써 그들의 성공적인 학업 수행에 목적을 두고 있다.
Ⅲ 장에서는 자연과학계열 학습자의 요구 분석을 실시하여 전공 학습의 필요성, 한국 학생과 유학생의 학습 격차, 전공 수업의 어려움 등을 확인 하고자하였다. 예비 설문조사, 본 설문조사, 인터뷰로 나누어 설문을 실시하였고, 요구분석 결과와 Ⅱ장에서의 어휘 분류 기준을 활용하여 선행 한국어 학습어휘 선정 방법과 선정 기준을 구축하였다.
Ⅳ 장에서는 Ⅲ장의 내용을 종합하여 최종적으로 자연과학계열 유학생을 위한 선행 한국어 학습어휘 목록을 선정하였다. 또한 선정 된 선행 한국어 학습어휘의 자료를 어떻게 활용할 수 있는지 실질적으로 응용 가능한 방안을 제시하고자 하였다.
Ⅴ장에서는 ‘선행 한국어 학습어휘’를 활용하여 자연과학계열 유학생의 문제점을 해소하고 앞으로 다양한 전공영역별 교육 자료가 구축되어야 함을 제안하고자 하였다.
본고는 성공적인 학업 수행에 목적 둔 학문 목적 학습자의 전공 수업의 어려움을 확인하고 이를 해결하기 위한 목적을 갖고 있다. 그들의 문제점이 무엇인지 정확하게 알아보기 위해 요구분석을 실시하였고, 이를 반영하여 교육 자료를 구축함에 의미가 있다. 다양한 전문적 지식을 다루는 영역이 많아지고 이를 전공하기 위한 학습자가 증가됨에 따라 그들을 위한 교육과정도 발맞춰 변화되고 있다. 이를 위해 가장 필요로 하는 것은 ‘어떠한 내용을 교육할 것인가’이다. 이에 따라 자연과학계열 유학생을 위한 교육 자료를 목록화 하였고 이후 유용한 도구로 활용되리라 기대한다.
