1920년대 한국 개신교계의 천주교 인식 = A Study on the Protestant Community's Perceptions of Catholicism in the 1920s - With a focus on The Chronicle of Korea Presbyterian Church and The Christian Messenger -

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study set out to examine the Protestant community's perceptions of Catholicism through The Chronicle of Korea Presbyterian Church (《朝鮮예수敎長老會史記》) and The Christian Messenger (《基督申報》) in the 1920s. There are quite a few studies on the relationships between them before the 1900s, but the research topic attracted little attention in the 1910s, which explains why the study focused on the 1920s which left relatively many materials to go on with.
Reviewing the materials, the investigator paid attention to such issues as "title," "example," "inheritance," and "commemoration" and pointed out the following aspects: first, The Chronicle of Korea Presbyterian Church used both "Chun Joo Gyo" (天主敎) and "Roma Gyo or Rama Gyo" (로마敎 또는 羅馬敎), but the editors picked the latter. Second, there were no specific examples of conflict or clash between them in The Chronicle of Korea Presbyterian Church since the 1910s. Third, The Chronicle of Korea Presbyterian Church judged that "The righteous blood of those martyrs are not only the beautiful seeds of Catholicism, but can be the line to guide our Protestantism." And finally, the Protestant community formed a "Propagation Society in Memory of Byeongin" (丙寅紀念傳道會) in 1926 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Catholicism's "Byeongin Persecution" (丙寅迫害).
Those data are not enough to conclude that the relationships between the two were "positive" or "negative." However, they seem to have been going through a process of "improvement" or "enhancement" gradually, judging from a bigger framework. Their relationships came to a lull with no conflicts between them seen from outside since the 1910s. Entering the 1920s, Protestantism seems to have started to acknowledge Catholicism as "one of the constituents of Christianity" and the "pioneer" in missionary works in Korea, thus moving toward the thawing season.
Of course, the Protestant community did not maintain the same perceptions of Catholicism, which is well demonstrated in The Christian Messenger that published both critical and favorable articles about Catholicism. However, it is noteworthy that favorable articles, which used to be absent in The Christian Messenger, started to be published. In short, it appears that the 1920s was an important transitional period in the relationships between Protestantism and Catholicism.
