In Korean history, several Stone Storehouse for Ice, called the Seog Bing Go, have been made to store natural ice in winter and to use it in summer.
In this study, the temperature distribution and the rate of heat transfer as functions of time and position of the structure, mainly for the Gyeongju Seog Bing Go, were studied theoretically to check the storability of ice in the Seog Bing Go.
A Bessel`s differential equation governing the temperature distribution with sinusoidal boundary conditions was derived and solved mathematically.
The physical properties of some materials and average temperature changes needed to perform the calculations were cited from several authors.
It is concluded that the structure of the Gyeongju Seo g Bing Go is sufficient to store ice all through the year, provided that more than 60% of the internal volume be filled with ice in winter. Moreover, the thickness of the hollow half-cylinder is optimum to make the amount of heat transferred the least for 3 to 4 months in the hottest years, and some assistant thermal insulators such as rice husks and sawdusts might have been used in the modest and cooler years to reduce heat transfer most effectively.
