The ability of neoplasms to elaborate and release a variety of biologic products into the circulation has been the subject of intense investigation over last two decades. In estimating prognosis of breast carcinomas, there is no confidential tumor markers used, except the estrogen receptors which indicate a likelihood of a response to endocrine therapy.
At present, established prognostic factors are tumor stage and histological grading. And an immunocytochemical study was carried out to examine the expression and the prognostic significance of human chorionic somatomammotropin(HCS), pregnancy specific beta-1-glycoporote-in(SP-1), and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin(β-HCG) in a series of 56 breast lesions Avidin-biotin complex was used to trypsin treated and nontreated tissue sections
The results obtained are as followings;
1. HCS positive reaction was seen in the epithelium of lobules and ducts in trypsin treated normal breast tissue.
2. HCS and SP-1 showed positive reaction on the epithelium of the fibrocystic disease in trypsin-treated tissue, and HCS showed positive reactions on the epithelium of the fibroade-nomas in both trypsin-treated and -nontreated tissues In trypsin treated tissues, SP-1 showed positive reaction on the fibroadenoma and HCS showed positive reactions on the intraductal papilloma.
3. Of breast carcinomas, HCS and SP-1 showed positive reactions in 65.7% and 37.1%, respectively in trypsin treated tissues
4. Beta-HCG showed Bo reactions on the all tissues regardless of trypsin treatment.
5. Trypsin treatment on the breast tissue showed increased rate of positive reactions with HCS and SP-1.
