개화기 국어연구학회의 활동과 창립 의의―‘한글모죽보기’를 중심으로― = Activities and the Significance of the Foundation of Gugeoyeongu Hakhoe during the Enlightenment Period ―Centered on “Hangeulmo Jukbogi”―

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper was written based on a document titled “Hangeulmo Jukbogi.” “Hangeulmo” is the old name of Hangeul Hakhoe(The Korean Language Society). The document records events from 1908 to 1917. Therefore, a closer look at this document can reveal the activities and the significance of the foundation of Hangeul Hakhoe.
Gugeoyeongu Hakhoe(국어연구학회), Korea’s first Korean language-related society, was founded as a private organization during the enlightenment period. Gugeoyeongu Hakhoe, which was founded on August 31, 1908 by graduates of Ju Si-gyeong’s Korean summer course(1907, 1908), played an important role in fostering and spreading Korean national pride through Korean language research and education during the enlightenment period.
Gugeoyeongu Hakhoe became Baedalmalgeul Modum in 1911 and then Hangeulmo in 1913. “Baedal” became “Han,” “Malgeul” became “Geul,” and “Modum” became “Mo.” Therefore, Hangeul Hakhoe was a society that researches and practices Baedalmalgeul, that is, Korean language and letter. Hangeul Hakhoe’s significance can be verified because it was the duty of Gugeoyeongu Hakhoe members to research and teach Korean.
