This study aims to deeply explore the experiential world of alcoholics from the perspective of patiency and the various forms of connections they form through the self-help group Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) during their recovery process. The research involved interviewing K and H, alcoholics in recovery through AA meetings, and listening to and following their life trajectories. Focusing on the dimension of passive acceptance I reconstructed the network of their experiences. As a result, the study discovered that patiency manifests in various forms in the experiences of alcoholism and recovery. These forms can be named as follows: <Alternation of Patiency-Agency>, <Fixation of Patiency>, <Impasse of Patiency>, <Connection with Patient-Assemblage>, and <Continuation of Patiency-Assemblage>. K and H endured life's suffering while continuously exerting agency to solve their problems. During this process, patiency and agency operated simultaneously; however, the experience of alcoholism began with the repeated frustrations of agency.
Alcoholism persisted for years as a process where the agency of alcohol and the patiency of the body combined, leading to the fixation of patiency. Physical symptoms began to appear as they became entangled in events not unrelated to the causes of their life's agony.
Despite suffering pain that led them towards death, they were in a self-destructive impasse of patiency where they could not stop drinking. However, K and H only began to desire life when their bodies reached the limit of enduring pain, and they connected with the patient-assemblage called AA. Within AA, K and H experienced the continuation of patiency by being influenced by the life force of other patients, participating daily in meetings, and reinterpretating the suffering embedded in their lives as their fault, thereby enduring in a differently. This continuation of patiency was made possible through by forming a patiency-assemblage, not only by acknowledging each other’s suffering but also by appropriating the suffering of other patients, thereby experiencing, collapsing, and destroying together in solidarity. These findings imply the possibility of expanding the concept of patiency and call for a patient-centric turn in the sociological exploration of action.
