1930년대 황애덕의 농촌사업과 여성운동

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 이제까지 독립운동가로만 알려져 왔던 황애덕의 1920∼30년대 사 회운동-농촌사업과 여성운동-을 조명하고자 했다. 3·1운동의 좌절로 황애덕은 민족운동의 방향을 농촌계몽운동으로 잡고 농촌사업을 구상했다. 그리고 출감 후 이화학당 대학과를 졸업하고 사감 겸 교사를 하며 조선YWCA연합 회의 회원, 회장으로 활동하며 기독교여성운동에 적극적으로 참여했다.
그러다 1925년 미국유학을 떠났는데 황애덕에게 미국유학은 여성지도자로서 실력과 자격을 갖춘다는 의미와 함께 미국기독교인 여성후원자들을 만나 귀국 후 전개할 농촌사업의 재정적 기반을 마련했다는데 큰 의의가 있었다. 또한 미국이라는 선진사회 부국을 직접 눈으로 확인하고 체험하는 계기가 되었다.
황애덕의 농촌사업과 여성운동은 미국유학에서 귀국 후 더욱 활발하게 전 개되었다. 협성여자신학교에 신설된 농촌사업지도교육과의 교수로 부임하여 학생들에게 농촌사업의 필요성을 가르치고 농촌현장에서의 실습을 지도했다.
또한 황해도 수안에 농장을 구입하고 농촌계몽운동을 전개하여 학교와 교회를 설립했고 이외에도 수안 부근, 만주 경성현 등으로 농촌사업을 확장했다. 그리고 조선YWCA연합회 농촌부 간사로서 농촌사업지를 수원 샘골로 정하고 최용신을 현장운동가, 농촌사업가로 파견했고, 농한기에 농촌부녀지도자 수양소를 개설하여 각지 농촌부녀들을 마을지도자로 육성했다.
한편 조선YWCA연합회 활동을 하는 이외에 경성여자소비조합, 조선직업 부인협회, 가정부인협회를 조직하여 도시여성의 단체활동을 전개했다. 여성의 경제의식·보건의식·사회의식 각성과 사회활동 경험, 여성의 친목 도모, 여성의 교양 증진과 생활개선을 꾀했다. 뿐만 아니라 여성교육에도 관심을 기울여 중앙보육학교를 인수하여 교장이 되어 학교를 경영하기도 했다.
이상에서 황애덕은 3.1독립운동이 좌절된 이후 기독교농촌운동, 여성경제 운동, 여성단체 활동, 교육운동과 같은 민족운동과 사회운동을 전개했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Esther Whang was one of independence movement leaders. But independence movement was unveiled and she went to jail for 3 years. After that she was interested in rural work, rural enlightenment movement and women's campaign. So she went to U.S. for real ability training.
She met a few American Christian women, supporters. Thanks to them she continued to study and be able to get money for rural work. She studied rural education at Colombia University, listened to agriculture at Pennsylvania State University, and experienced farmer's life near that university.
Returning home from abroad she was appointed teacher of new department of training rural workers at Hyubsung theological Seminary for women. She trained her students and sent to village for field practice. And she bought a land Suan in Whanghae Province. She wanted to make ideal farm for Korean farmers and developed rural enlightenment movement there with her students.
Also she took charge of rural department of Korean YWCA. One of it's project was to send Choi Yongshin as leader and teacher and supported money for rural work at Suwon Samgol country. The other was to train country women for leading their neighbor women to improve farmer's life.
In addition she organized Seoul consumer's cooperative society for women and run cooperative store for economic campaign for women and people with her comrades. She formed Housewives' society and tried to improve housewife's life with her like-minded people. These group are based on her women's right consciousness. Also she undertook and run Chungang Kindergarten Normal school as principal. Her passion for Korean women's education was great but she had to stop that because of lack of enough money to run school.
Finally she was leader of national movement and women's campaign and educator.
