晩唐九僧의 詩風이 한국 禪詩 品評에 끼친 영향

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국의 선시(禪詩)에 대한 문인 사대부의 품평은 대체로 ‘소순지기(蔬筍之氣)’로 대표된다. 소순지기란 쉰 떡과 같이 힘없는 기운을 의미한다. 이러한 현상의 원인은 여러 가지가 있지만 크게 문학내적 평가와 정치사회적 현상에 기인한다. 첫째로 문학내적 원인은 답습이다. 즉 한국 사대부 문인이 중국 사대부 문인의 선시에 대한 품평을 답습한 것이다. 대표적으로 중국 송나라의 유명한 문인인 구양수와 사마광의 선시에 대한 평가가 바로 만당구승(晩唐九僧)에 대한 평가이다. 하지만 후대 한국 문인은 만당구숭의 시를 소순지기로 폄하한다. 이러한 현상은 둘째 원인인 정치사회적 원인과 부합한다. 주지하다시피 조선시대는 숭유억불정책을 강조한 국가였고, 이에 따라 불교와 승려는 탄압을 받았다. 선시 또한 예와가 아니어서 중국 문인들이 긍정적으로 평가한 만당구승의 시를 의도적으로 소순지기로 폄하하였다. 그러나 만당구승의 시집은 조선에 유통되지 않았을 가능성이 크며, 단지 중국 문인들의 단편적인 평가를 통해 한국 사대부들이 선시에 대한 선입견을 만들었을 것으로 보인다. 이에 본고에서는 만당구승의 시에 대한 중국문인의 품평에 대한 한국 사대부 문인의 변형과 그로 인해 발생한 문제의 극복에 대해 살펴보았다.
