    The information age and knowledge based society need self-directedness, in education self-directed learning is emphasized.
    The purpose of this study was to investigate the concept of SDL and SDLP model. SDL is process in which individuals take the initiative, with or without the help of others, to diagnose their learning need, formulate learning goals, identify resources for learning, select and implement learning strategies, and evaluate learning outcomes.
    And SDL is a foundation of transformative-learning, there are three components in the SDLP model: the control factor, interaction between educator and student, and influences on the interaction between educator and student. The model can be used as a framework to determine how the process of SDL is working in any specific environment.
    Specifically, environmental characteristics focus on are the following: how learning needs are determined, the availability of resources, outside influences on the learning process, feedback, time management, group work, room arrangement, and comfort level.
    In SDL, learners determine, investigate, and evaluate their needs. They need to reflect on their needs and assumptions as they plan their own learning. When this reflection process moves beyond simple questioning and becomes more critical, the potential for transformative learning exists.
    No longer are learners of teacher-directed process, they are responsible and accountable for their own development.
