In order to evaluate and interpret cultural patterns related to a given culture, an in depth understanding and knowledge of the given culture is necessary. In the arts, an analysis of the fundamentals and the context in which it is applied is crucial. Within a frame of a culture, one needs to recognize its systems, principles, grammars and cultural rules for the creation of a new form of the arts. Particularly, for understanding the dance and its expressional logic of given culture, it requires not only an explicit understanding of the movements in terms of time and space, but also philosophical background, and relationship with the other arts in a holistic point of view.
The renowned dance anthropolotist Joann Kealiinohomoku, who has previously stated that "Ballet is a form of ethnic dance," finds that the attempt to decipher the Asian dance form through Western ideology is problematic. Moreover, such an attempt lead to contradiction of the aesthetic standard, the creative inclination and the sense of values of that culture promoted under the current era of globalization. In this sense, various interpretations for understanding dance have to be achieved by the identification and abandonment of the prejudice that are based upon one's previous experiences and have to be accomplished through the dialectical process between objectivity which has definite structures of meaning and one's own subjectivity which comes from existential experience of man. Through this objective and subjective analysis of the unique modes and characteristics and national identity related to Korean dance as an ethnic dance, one can take part in the creation of a new Korean dance culture thereby providing a basis for the globalization of Korean dance.
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine how the theory of Yin-Yang and Five Agents appear in the Korean dance space and to find it's expressional principles. The statement of the problems were the following: 1) What is the cultural context and thought related to Korean dance?, 2) What is the Theory of Yin-Yang and Five Agents?; 3) What is the difference between the Asian and Western concept of space; 4) What is the unique characteristic related to the structure and quality of movement of Korean dance?; 5) Determine whether there is a relationship between the special characteristic and the Theory of Yin-Yang and Five Agents in each dance form.
The subjects for analysis include great representation of the two main typical Korean dances, Kim Chun Hung's style of Cho Yong Mu, a Court Dance, and Young Sook Han's style of Salpuri Chum, the creative national folk dance. Both Kim Chun Hung and Han Young Sook are the intangible cultural assets preserving the techniques related to each dance. Moreover, these two dances have been recognized by the government as cultural property, and Lee Ae Ju has been carrying on the tradition of the Salpuri Chum. The study analyzed these dances with three different methods : Labanotation analysis, Choremetrics analysis and a computer analysis of the digital video recording of the dances.
The philosophical components and principles of Korean traditional culture which appeared in this study are Heaven, Earth, Man theory and Yin-Yang and Five Agents principle. Heaven, Earth, Man theory which creates the Great Absolute (Tae-geuk) comes from a view of the world in deviation of the number of three whereas Yin-Yang and Five Agents principle come from a view of the world in deviation of the number of two. In relationship between these two theories, Tae-geuk, whose fundamental design does not have a beginning or an end, therefore non-polar, creates the opposite side of a Yin and Yang by the first change of the primary breath. Within it, the Yin is constantly moving and changing into the Yang and the Yang into the Yin. Then by changing the process twice and three times, Yin and Yang are divided into four different faces, Tae-Yang, Tae-Yin, So-Yang, So-Yin and finally are transformed into the Eight Trigrams.
Also the first step of the Tae-guk concept which transformed into the Yin-Yang further divides into Five Agents-water, fire, wood, metal, earth. The reaction between the Yin-Yang and the Five Agents provide an explanation for the evolution of the world. To summarize, this concept can be explained through the following inductive and connotive formulas :
    'Yin+Yang=Tae-guek', 'water+fire+wood+metal+earth=YingYang' and
    'Tae-guek=yinyang' 'Yin+Yang=water+fire+wood+metal+earth'.
This relationship between the three-pronged theory and the Yin-Yang concept is exemplified in the use of space in Korean Dance. The process of dividing space begins with points in space, then changes into a lines, a two dimensional polygon, a three dimensional polyhedron, and finally transforms into a sphere, which creates an infinite space.
The triangular frame of vertical space introduced under the Heaven, Earth, Man theory and the rectangular frame of horizontal space introduced under the Yin-Yang theory react in such a way that the combination of the Yin-Yang theories create a horizontal frame in 5directions by including concept of center. These forms are the center theme of the heaven, earth, man element of the theory of Yin-Yang and Five Agents. Structional principles in space are circular lines and directional lines. The circular lines are distinctively related to the Tae-guek theory and the directional lines are specifically attributable to the Yin-Yang and the Five Agents. These lines do not react independently, rather they create a composition of solid space through ists interrelationship. This space represents an endless space which further may symbolize the universe and the ultimate ends of the world.
Form the analysis of the Cho Yong Mu and Salpuri Chum, the study found prime examples of the special relationship of the Heaven, Earth, Man element of the theory of Yin-Yang and the Five Agents. These Korean dances characterize the previously discussed concepts of the horizontal and vertical frames in space. In vertical frames in space, Cho Yong Mu is a prime example of the bound flow structure of the Tae-geuk whereas the Salpuri Chum represents the free flow structure of the Tae-geuk. This means that Korean dance expresses subtle movement is a foudamental expressive component of Korean dance. The resulting floor pattern of Cho Yong Mu, the horizontal frame of the space, exemplify the concept of the five directions which is a main component of the Yin-Yang and the Five Agents theory. Whereas, the Salpuri Chum, through its triangular frame and its special disposition, is a great representation of the Heaven, Earth, Man theory. Moreover, both dances include reversing movements, Three steps forward and Three step backward, Ahead three and Behind three, which are also expressive principles of the Yin-Yang. The special harmony of the structural form of body movements, Big three-Small three, in-out, upward-dawnward, Sangsung-Hangang is represented in Cho Yong Mu as a bound flow dynamic and in Salpuri Chum as a free flow dynamic.
The study found that the heaven, Earth, Man, Yin-Yang and the Five Agents were foudamental components of Korean dance. It is proven through the analysis of the movements of both dances and their use of space relative to the two theories. This result provides a medium to distinguish Korean dance as ethnochorelolgically independent from other forms of dance, providing a foundation for creating a distinctively Korean principle of choreography. In order to systematize the structure of Korean dance and it's movement creation, we must focus our efforts to adopt the theory of Heaven, Earth, Mar and the Yin-Yang and the Five Agents. This effort will result in further globalization and understanding of Korean dance worldwide.
