This study examines the historical role of Song Yingchang, the Ming dynasty's Supreme Commander (Jinglue) during the early phase of the Imjin War, by analyzing the textual character and historiographical value of Jinglue Fuguo Yaobian (經略復國要編). Through a comparative reading with the J ingbirok (懲毖錄), this article aims to illuminate the divergent perceptions and narrative frameworks surrounding the war in Ming China and Joseon Korea. Jinglue Fuguo Yaobian appears to be a compilation of documents produced by Song Yingchang's office, reflecting Ming strategic planning, diplomatic logic for peace negotiations, and the perception of Joseon. Although the text holds substantial value as a primary source, it exhibits strong tendencies toward self-justification―downplaying Joseon's military reports and overstating Ming achievements―thereby requiring cautious and critical use based on cross-examination with contemporary sources.
The study demonstrates that Chinese scholarship generally adopts a more favorable view of Song Yingchang, considering the political factionalism and fiscal constraints within the Ming court, whereas Korean scholarship largely maintains a critical stance rooted in Joseon's wartime perspective and pro-war arguments. Moreover, this paper reveals that Song's engagement with Wang Yangming's Neo-Confucian thought influenced his perception of the war and his inclination toward negotiation with Japan. By juxtaposing major sources from both countries, this research argues that the historiography of the Imjin War should move beyond a single national framework and be understood within the broader East Asian international order.
