자신과 같은 아프리카계 미국인들의 미국 사회에서의 삶에 대한 작품을 통해서 어거스트 윌슨은 자신들의 고유한 정체성과 문화가 존중되어야함을 강조했다. 또한, 그는 미국 사회 내에서 자신이 경험한 것 뿐 만이 아니라 자신과 같은 아프리카계 미국인들의 경험을 바탕으로 작품을 쓴 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 논문은 피아노 레슨(The Piano Lesson)이라는 윌슨의 작품을 다루고 있다. 이 작품의 중심에는 버니스와 보이 윌리라는 아프리카계 미국인 남매의 갈등이 있는데, 이들의 갈등은 그들 조상의 유물이자 가보인 피아노에 대한 서로 다른 입장 차이에서 비롯된다고 할 수 있다. 즉, 버니스는 자신의 조상들이 백인들의 노예였던 과거를 부정하는 마음에서 피아노를 팔지 않고자 하는 입장을 고수하고 보이 윌리는 피아노를 팔아서 조상들을 노예로 부렸던 백인 서터가의 땅에 대한 토지소유권을 주장함으로써 조상들의 자존심을 회복하고자 한다. 이처럼, 피아노를 어떻게 처리할 건지에 대한 문제는 우리가 역사를 어떻게 해석해야 하는지라는 문제와 직접적으로 연결되어있다. 올바른 역사 인식의 한 방법은 과거의 부정이나 미래에 대한 거부가 아닌 과거와 현재 그리고 미래의 공존을 받아들이는 것이다. 다시 말해, 과거가 없이는 현재도 미래도 없기에 버니스와 보이 윌리의 조상들의 과거를 있는 그대로 받아들이고, 역사의 일부로서 인식하는 것이 필요할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As an African-American, August Wilson wrote plays about the lives of African-Americans in the American society and he asserted that their peculiar identity and culture should be respected. He is also known as to have written plays based on the experiences of the African Americans as well as his own experiences in the American society. This article deals with one of Wilson's plays The Piano Lesson. At the core of the play is the conflict between siblings named Berniece and Boy Willie who are African Americans and it arises from the different points of view about the piano which is the heritage of their ancestors and a family heirloom. That is, by denying the past of the ancestors who were slaves to the whites, Berniece refuses to sell the piano whereas Boy Willie hopes to recover their ancestors' pride and by getting the landownership over the Sutter's land. Thus, whether to sell the piano or not is directly related to the question of how to interpret our history. One of the proper ways to interpret history lies not in denying the past and refusing to accept the future but in accepting the coexistence of the past, the present and the future. In other words, the present and the future cannot exist without the past, it is important to accept the past of the ancestors of Berniece and Boy Willie and to recognize it as an important part of history.
