Korea and Japan historically had made various exchange relationships for a long time, which occurred with large scale of immigrations among two nations. Most of the existing studies on these immigrants who dwelt in 'group residences' in Korea and Japan have a tendency to be in 'control' and 'regulation' by authority. As a result, the immigrants have been regarded as kind of threat which disturb public order. In order to set up the actual state of the immigrants, we tried to consider from a viewpoint of not 'control' and 'regulation' but 'exchange' and 'coexistence'. Holding this kind of viewpoint, we can prove why they get across the sea, how they lead a life with the natives.
On this project for two years, we set up six themes from ancient times to modern times for analyzing Korea-Japan immigration's residences located in two nations. In the first year of this project, we researched the group residences in where the people migrated from Korea to Japan lived. First, it was proved the process for the immigrants of Baekje origin organized with Baekje's Royal family(百濟王族) as a leader in the 5th century to settle in Kawachi(河內) while considering the domestic situation of two nations. And we could make clear the way that ‘wondering people’ of Baekje and Koguryo perished in the mid-7th century had subsisted in the ancient japanese society. We also founded the surrounding environment of that the Korean coming in Japan by drifting or being captured, roughly late the Koryo dynasty to early the Chosun dynasty, and the life for the Imjin war prisoner who were forced to settle in western Japan as well as descendants of them. And we examined how did a pottery worker Jangheongong(張獻功), one of the Imjin war prisoner and his descendants managed their life in the Okinawa. Finally, we showed the internal structure, the life, and the relationship with the community, which Korean residents in Japan society had in Kanto(關東) during the 1920's to the 1930's.
In the second year of this project, we researched the group residences in where the people migrated from Japan to Korea settled. Using the Keyhole-shaped tumuli(前方後圓墳) remained in the region, we tried to show the activity which japanese did in southern Korea. And it could be proved that Baekje Officials of Wa(倭) Origin(倭系百濟官僚) in 6th century had a multiple subordinate relationship through the activity of Illa(日羅) who appointed to the post of Dalsol(達率) by Baekje. Also, it was founded that some of Japanese emigrated to Korea for the purpose of finding a shelter and economic benefits in the period of Late Koryo Early Chosun. And we showed the relationship between Japanese in Waegwan(倭館) and Chosun government as well as the people of there using an analysis of the annual events and common contact with Korean. We also investigate why Japanese soldiers surrendered to Chosun, how many they surrendered, how they settled in Korea at the Imjin war. Finally, we found the growth of Japanese residents in Korea before and after 1910 when Japan-Korea Annexation happened, so that finding cooperation or complications between the Japanese Government General of Korea and residents
